Overview

EN 50131-2-7-3:2012/IS1:2014 is a CLC/CENELEC European standard for active surface-mounted glass break detectors used in building alarm systems. It specifies performance and test requirements to support security Grades 1–4 (per EN 50131-1) and covers both wired and wireless (specific or non-specific) devices across environmental Classes I–IV (per EN 50130-5). This standard applies to indoor surface-mounted detectors only and does not cover outdoor glass break detectors or system interconnections.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Active surface-mounted glass break detectors for installation in buildings; not for outdoor use.
  • Security Grade compliance: Devices must meet all requirements of the declared Grade (1–4) as defined by EN 50131-1.
  • Environmental classes: Devices are assessed to EN 50130-5 environmental Classes I–IV to ensure reliable operation in specified conditions.
  • Wiring options: Supports specific or non-specific wired and wire-free detectors.
  • Mandatory vs. optional functions: Additional functions may be included provided they do not adversely affect mandatory functions.
  • Test magnet specification (IS1 / Annex C): Interpretation Sheet permits using a NeoDym (NdFeB N40) test magnet instead of AlNiCo for reproducible interference testing. Key magnet parameters referenced:
    • Remanence: B_r min 1 275 mT ±2%
    • Energy product: (BH)max 310 kJ/m³ ±3%
    • Polarization working point: 0.835 T ±2%
    • Calibration and measurements follow EN/IEC magnetic material standards (EN 60404-5, EN 60404-14, IEC 60404-8-1).
  • Calibration recommendation: Use accredited test houses for magnet adjustment and calibration to ensure reproducible test results.

The standard SIST EN 50131-2-7-3:2012/IS1:2014 provides a comprehensive framework for the implementation of active surface mounted glass break detectors in buildings, establishing crucial guidelines for security systems. This European standard defines the scope of performance and reliability specific to intrusion detectors, particularly focusing on glass break detectors that monitor the integrity of windows and similar surfaces. One of the notable strengths of this standard is its classification of security Grades 1 to 4, which allows users to determine the level of protection required based on the sensitivity of the environment and potential threats, as referenced in EN 50131-1. This graded approach ensures that installations can be tailored to meet varying security needs, thus enhancing the overall safety of the premises. Moreover, the standard specifies environmental classes I to IV (see EN 50130-5), ensuring that the selected glass break detectors can operate effectively under diverse conditions. This is particularly relevant for industrial and commercial applications where environmental factors can significantly impact device performance. Additionally, by allowing the inclusion of functions beyond the mandatory requirements-as long as they do not compromise the detectors' primary functionalities-the standard provides flexibility for manufacturers to innovate. This aspect is critical in a field that continuously evolves with technological advances. It is important to note that the standard explicitly excludes requirements for outdoor glass break detectors, making it clear that its focus is solely on indoor applications. This specificity aids in narrowing down the performance metrics necessary for ensuring optimal functionality and security in controlled settings. In summary, SIST EN 50131-2-7-3:2012/IS1:2014 offers a solid foundation for the deployment and operation of glass break detectors, setting industry benchmarks for reliability and performance in intrusion alarms. The standard’s relevance in the current security landscape is amplified by its ability to adapt to varying threat levels and environmental conditions, making it an essential reference for anyone involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of security systems.
