Overview

SIST EN 1915-1:2002/kprA1:2008 is an important amendment to the European Standard EN 1915-1:2001, focusing on aircraft ground support equipment (GSE). Published by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) in 2008, this standard specifies basic safety requirements for GSE used in aviation ground operations. Ground support equipment must meet these updated requirements to ensure safe, reliable operation while minimizing risks such as noise, vibration, and mechanical hazards.

This amendment aligns EN 1915-1 especially with relevant EC Directives, including the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, providing a presumption of conformity when implemented. It addresses modifications across multiple clauses and annexes to integrate improved standards for noise measurement, vibration control, acoustic warnings, and operator safety.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements and Protective Measures
EN 1915-1/prA1 updates clarify general safety provisions that GSE must comply with, including the latest principles from EN ISO 12100 on machinery safety design. It emphasizes harmonization with related standards such as EN 1915-2, EN 1915-3, EN 1915-4, and EN 12312, covering vehicles, vibration, noise, and specific equipment requirements.

  • Noise and Vibration Measurement
The amendment refines conditions and methods for measuring noise and vibrations on GSE machines, ensuring safer work environments and reduced operator exposure to harmful effects.

  • Auditory/Acoustic Warning Devices
Updated requirements for auditory warnings stress the need for effective alarms, particularly for reversing self-propelled equipment, mandating automatic optical/acoustic signals to alert personnel in hazardous zones.

  • Design and Manufacturer Information
Modifications stress clear marking with manufacturer details, machinery designation, and year of construction. The documentation also mandates detailed test reports for lifting equipment integrated within GSE to certify safety and performance.

  • Harmonization with International Standards
The amendment replaces and updates several referenced standards to current ISO and EN ISO equivalents, such as EN ISO 12100 for machine safety, EN ISO 13850 for emergency stops, and EN ISO 7731 for danger signals, enhancing consistency and compliance across Europe.

Applications

SIST EN 1915-1:2002/kprA1:2008 applies primarily to manufacturers, operators, and safety regulators of aircraft ground support equipment. Its practical value includes:

  • Ensuring all GSE meets stringent health and safety requirements to protect ground personnel and equipment.
  • Providing standardized testing and measurement methods for vibration and noise emissions from GSE, contributing to improved occupational safety.
  • Facilitating compliance with EU Machinery Directive and other regulations for GSE introduced in European markets.
  • Helping manufacturers design and document equipment that minimizes risks from operational hazards, including mechanical, acoustic, and thermal dangers.
  • Supporting maintenance and operational procedures through updated safety guidelines and protective measures.

This standard benefits airports, airlines, ground handling companies, and regulatory bodies committed to enhancing aviation ground safety and equipment reliability.

Related Standards

SIST EN 1915-1:2002/kprA1:2008 should be used alongside the following key standards for comprehensive coverage of aircraft GSE safety:

  • EN 1915-2 – General requirements for ground support vehicles
  • EN 1915-3 – Methods for vibration measurement and reduction on GSE
  • EN 1915-4 – Noise measurement and reduction methods on GSE
  • EN 12312 (all parts) – Specific requirements for various types of ground support equipment
  • EN ISO 12100 – Safety of machinery – Basic concepts and design principles
  • EN ISO 13850 – Safety machinery emergency stop principles
  • EN ISO 7731 – Ergonomics of auditory danger signals
  • EN ISO 13732-1 – Assessment of hot surface contact safety
  • EN 60204-1 – Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment requirements

These related standards ensure a holistic approach to design, testing, operation, and maintenance of aircraft ground support equipment that meets evolving safety, ergonomic, and environmental challenges.

By adhering to SIST EN 1915-1:2002/kprA1:2008, the aviation industry ensures improved safety, performance, and regulatory compliance for GSE, contributing to efficient, secure ground operations worldwide.
