Overview

SIST EN 3526:2024 is a European standard published by CEN, specifying the technical requirements for aerospace-grade steel 15CrMoV6 (W.nr 1.7334). This steel is air melted, hardened, and tempered, available as sheets and strips with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 mm to 6 mm. The tensile strength (Rm) is regulated between 980 MPa and 1180 MPa, ensuring high mechanical performance suitable for aerospace applications. SIST EN 3526:2024 updates and supersedes the earlier 2007 edition, incorporating editorial refinements and clarifications to comply with the EN 4500 series standards.

The document serves the aerospace industry by defining material properties, chemical compositions, dimensions, and inspection methods, supporting manufacturers and purchasers in maintaining consistent, high-quality steel for critical aerospace components.

Key Topics

  • Material Specification: Defines steel grade 15CrMoV6 (1.7334), characterized by:

    • Chemical composition limits including C (0.12–0.18%), Si, Mn, P, S, Cr (1.25–1.50%), Mo (0.80–1.00%), Ni (up to 0.30%), and Fe as base.
    • Production method: Air melted and rolled sheets and strips.
    • Delivery conditions: Hardened and tempered with specific heat treatment temperatures (955°C–995°C quenching; 615°C–655°C tempering).
  • Mechanical Properties:

    • Tensile strength (Rm) range of 980 MPa to 1180 MPa.
    • Proof stress minimum of 780 MPa.
    • Hardness between HB ≤ 197 (softened) and 309 ≤ HV ≤ 371 (hardened and tempered).
    • Minimum elongation of 10% ensuring adequate ductility.
  • Dimensional Criteria:

    • Thickness from 0.5 mm to 6 mm.
    • Test sampling direction along the longitudinal axis (LT).
  • Inspection and Testing:

    • Visual testing (VT) for imperfections.
    • Micrographic examination for cleanliness and inclusion content according to EN 2951.
    • Qualification of semi-finished products in line with EN 2043.
  • Standard Development:

    • Developed by ASD-STAN and approved by CEN with adherence required from member countries by June 2024.
    • Contains annexes detailing standard evolution and references to related aerospace standards.

Applications

SIST EN 3526:2024 steel grade 15CrMoV6 is tailored for aerospace industry use, particularly where high strength-to-weight ratios, durability, and reliability are critical. Common practical applications include:

  • Aircraft structural components requiring robust and fatigue-resistant steel.
  • Engine parts exposed to high mechanical stresses and temperature variation.
  • Aerospace assemblies using thin sheets and strips where precise mechanical properties are essential.
  • Manufacture of aerospace brackets, fittings, and mounts where hardened and tempered steel ensures longevity and safety.

This standard ensures consistency and reliability in material properties, supporting aerospace manufacturers in meeting demanding regulatory and safety requirements.

Related Standards

SIST EN 3526:2024 references and aligns with several other key aerospace standards to ensure comprehensive material qualification:

  • EN 4700-001: Technical specification for plates, sheets, and strips of wrought steels and heat-resistant alloys, providing detailed testing and inspection frameworks.
  • EN 2043: General requirements for semi-finished product qualification (excluding forgings and castings), critical for material certification.
  • EN 2951: Micrographic determination for assessing non-metallic inclusions affecting material cleanliness and quality.
  • EN 4258: Describes the overall organization of metallic aerospace material standards, providing context for EN 3526 within broader aerospace material regulation.
  • EN 4500-005: Rules for drafting and presentation of material standards specifically for steels, applied in structuring EN 3526 content.

Adherence to SIST EN 3526:2024 in conjunction with these related standards helps aerospace industry professionals ensure conformity to stringent quality and performance benchmarks in steel materials.

By following SIST EN 3526:2024, aerospace manufacturers and material suppliers can confidently achieve the high-grade mechanical properties and quality controls necessary for critical aerospace structural applications. This standard serves as a vital reference for engineers, quality assurance teams, and procurement managers focused on premium aerospace steel sheets and strips.
