Overview
EN 2591-506:2001 (Aerospace series) defines a standardized test method to verify that elements of electrical and optical connections can withstand the mechanical action of tools used for insertion and extraction of contacts. Intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test provisions), this CEN/AECMA standard focuses on tool-induced stresses that could affect connector integrity during assembly, maintenance or field operations.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Method for checking resistance of connection elements to tool use (insertion/extraction).
- Specimen preparation: Specimens prepared per the applicable technical specification. Required details include:
- Type of cable and specimen wiring
- Tools for insertion and extraction
- Initial and final measurements (if applicable)
- Axial loads to be applied during Phase 1 and Phase 2
- Contact retention force value (per EN 2591-409)
- Test configuration:
- For each contact size, five cavities are tested per phase (or all contacts if the arrangement has fewer than 10 contacts).
- Cavities used in one phase must not be reused in the other phase.
- Procedure:
- Phase 1 - Extraction tool rotation: Insert extraction tool, apply specified axial load, perform alternating rotation (per figure), then extract the contact. Reintroduce contact and repeat 4 times on each of the five cavities (20 operations per contact size).
- Phase 2 - Insertion tool rotation: Withdraw contact, reinsert using the insertion tool with specified axial load, perform alternating rotation, extract tool and withdraw contact. Repeat 4 times on each of the five cavities.
- If a tool is damaged during testing it must be replaced.
- Measurements and acceptance:
- Final inspection and measurements are carried out as applicable and include references to EN 2591-101 (visual examination) and EN 2591-409 (contact retention in insert).
Applications and who uses it
- Connector and harness manufacturers validating durability of electrical and optical connection elements.
- Aerospace OEMs and suppliers performing qualification, acceptance and incoming inspection.
- Test laboratories and quality/inspection engineers ensuring compatibility of tools and contacts.
- Maintenance organizations and certification bodies assessing connector robustness under repeated tool use.
