Ta standard opisuje varnost električnih motornih ali magnetnih: – ročnih orodij (IEC 62841-2); – prenosnih orodij (IEC 62841-3); – strojev za trato in vrt (IEC 62841-4). Za zgoraj navedene kategorije izdelkov se v nadaljevanju uporablja izraz »orodja« ali »stroji«. Nazivna napetost enofaznih orodij na izmenično ali enosmerno napetost ne presega 250 V, trifaznih orodij na izmenično napetost pa 480 V. Nazivna vhodna moč ne presega 3700 W. Omejitve veljavnosti tega standarda za baterijska orodja so podane v K.1 in L.1. Ta standard obravnava tveganja, ki jih predstavljajo orodja in katerim so izpostavljene vse osebe pri običajni uporabi in pričakovani nepravilni uporabi orodij. Ta standard zajema orodja z električnimi grelnimi elementi. Zahteve za motorje, ki niso ločeni od napajanja in katerih osnovna izolacija ni zasnovana za nazivne napetosti orodij, so podane v dodatku B. Zahteve za motorna ali magnetna orodja, ki se napajajo prek polnilne baterije, in baterijske pakete za ta orodja so podane v dodatku K. Zahteve za ta orodja, ki se lahko tudi napajajo in/ali polnijo neposredno iz električnega omrežja ali neizoliranega vira, so podane v dodatku L. Ročna električna orodja, ki se lahko namestijo na nosilec ali delovno stojalo in se uporabljajo kot nepremična orodja, ne da bi za to bilo treba orodje kakorkoli spremeniti, so zajete v tem standardu, tako kombiniranje ročnega orodja in nosilca pa se obravnava kot prenosno orodje in je zajeto v 3. delu.
