SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012
Connectors for electronic equipment - Tests and measurements - Part 9-2: Endurance tests - Test 9b: Electrical load and temperature
- Abstract
IEC 60512-9-2:2011 when required by the detail specification, this part of IEC 60512, is used for testing connectors within the scope of technical committee 48. It may also be used for similar devices when specified in a detail specification. The object of this standard is to detail a standard test method to assess the ability of a connector to withstand elevated temperatures with electrical loading. This standard cancels and replaces Test 9b of IEC 60512-5, issued in 1992.

SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 is a Slovenian standard published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), identical to EN 60512-9-2:2012 and based on IEC 60512-9-2:2011. It specifies Test 9b, an endurance test for connectors for electronic equipment that assesses how well a connector withstands elevated temperature while carrying electrical load. The test is used when a detail specification calls for it, and it can also be applied to similar devices when that is specified.
What does SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 specify?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 specifies a standard test method for connectors within the scope of IEC technical committee 48, and it may also be used for similar devices when the detail specification allows it. Its purpose is to check performance under heat plus current, so the reader knows this is an endurance test, not a general design standard.
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 6 and Annex ZA.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| ZA | Normative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications |
Clause 1 states the scope and object, clause 2 lists the normative references, clause 3 covers preparation, clause 4 gives the test method, clause 5 gives the final measurements, and clause 6 lists the details that must be specified for a particular test.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 is built around controlled heating with electrical load, followed by post-test checks. In practice, the detail specification sets the exact test values, while this standard defines the test sequence and the control points that keep results comparable.
- Prepare the specimen with temperature sensing devices - Clause 3.1 requires temperature-sensing device(s) of the dimensions given in the detail specification, and the specimen must be wired and mounted as specified. This matters because the connector must be tested in a representative setup.
- Use a suitable climatic chamber - Clause 3.2 requires a chamber and says air circulation must not influence the specimen. This reduces test distortion caused by the chamber itself.
- Measure insulation resistance in the hot condition - Clause 4 requires insulation resistance to be checked initially and again at the end, according to IEC 60512-3-1, test 3a. This shows whether the connector still insulates properly after thermal stress.
- Control temperature and current together - The chamber is held at 70 % ± 5 % of the specified maximum operating temperature, and current is increased slowly until the specified maximum operating temperature is approached. No further current increase is allowed before thermal stability is reached, and neither the specified maximum operating temperature nor the specified current may be exceeded during adjustment.
- Reach the operating temperature without overstress - If the current alone does not bring the specimen to its specified maximum operating temperature, the chamber temperature is increased until that temperature is reached. This means the test can be run with the thermal condition the detail specification wants, even when the electrical load is not enough by itself.
- Maintain the exposure for the specified duration - The test is held at the specified maximum operating temperature for the time given in the detail specification. Preferred durations are 250 h, 500 h, 1 000 h, and 2 000 h, so users can align the test with their qualification plan.
- Apply the pass/fail limit on overheating - If the maximum operating temperature is exceeded by 5 % under normal test conditions, the test is abandoned and regarded as failed. That gives a clear limit for test control.
- Carry out the final measurements - Clause 5 calls for contact resistance, housing (shell) electrical continuity where applicable, insulation resistance, voltage proof, visual examination, and any operational tests required by the detail specification. This is the evidence used to judge whether the connector survived the endurance exposure.
Clause 6 asks the detail specification to state the maximum operating temperature, duration, maximum load current, insulation resistance in hot condition, recovery time before final measurements, final-measurement requirements, and any deviation from the standard method.
What terms does SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 define?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 uses several test terms that matter when setting up and reporting the method.
- Detail specification - The product-specific specification that sets the test values and any permitted deviations.
- Specimen - The connector sample prepared and mounted for the test.
- Maximum operating temperature - The temperature the specimen must reach and maintain during the exposure.
- Climatic chamber - The controlled enclosure used to apply the temperature condition.
- Insulation resistance - The electrical resistance used to check insulation performance before and after heating.
- Voltage proof - The withstand check carried out after the endurance exposure according to IEC 60512-4-1, test 4a.
- Contact resistance - The post-test electrical resistance check used to confirm contact performance.
- Housing (shell) electrical continuity - The check of electrical continuity through the connector housing where that applies.
Who uses SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 is used by connector manufacturers, test laboratories, and quality teams that need to verify endurance under heat and load. It is also useful for engineers and buyers who write or review a detail specification, because the document shows which test conditions and follow-up measurements must be stated before testing starts.
The standard is relevant wherever connectors for electronic equipment are qualified or checked for thermal endurance, and it can also be used for similar devices when the detail specification says so.
What changed in SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 cancels and replaces Test 9b of IEC 60512-5, issued in 1992.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 refers to these standards for setup and follow-up measurements:
- IEC 60512-1-1 - Visual examination used in the final measurements.
- IEC 60512-1-100 - General guidance and the structure of the IEC 60512 series.
- IEC 60512-2-1 - Contact resistance by the millivolt level method.
- IEC 60512-2-2 - An alternative contact resistance method named in the final measurements.
- IEC 60512-2-6 - Housing (shell) electrical continuity.
- IEC 60512-3-1 - Insulation resistance, including the hot-condition measurement used here.
- IEC 60512-4-1 - Voltage proof after the endurance test.
- IEC 60512-14 series and IEC 60529 - Optional sealing or ingress protection tests when the detail specification requires them.
Annex ZA maps the international publications to their European equivalents.
What does the SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 document contain?
SIST EN 60512-9-2:2012 contains a compact endurance test method rather than a broad design guide. It gives the specimen preparation rules, the chamber and airflow condition, the current-ramp procedure, the thermal exposure condition, and the recovery step before final checks.
It also sets out the required end-of-test measurements and points the user to the detail specification for the values that must be chosen for a specific connector. In practice, the document is used to plan testing, run the exposure under controlled conditions, and record whether the connector still meets the post-test electrical and visual checks.
