SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 is a CENELEC European Standard for Type 1 (copper LC style) connectors for electrical and electronic equipment. It specifies the mechanical mating interface, pin assignment, and additional mechanical, electrical, signal integrity, environmental, and reliability requirements for 2-way shielded or unshielded free and fixed connectors used for balanced single-pair data transmission.

What does SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 covers two-way, shielded or unshielded, free and fixed connectors known as Type 1. The scope links these connectors to balanced single-pair data transmission with frequencies up to 600 MHz and current carrying capacity up to 2,0 A at 60 °C.

The document is organized into six clauses:

  • Clause 1 Scope
  • Clause 2 Normative references
  • Clause 3 Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 Common features and typical connector pair
  • Clause 5 Characteristics
  • Clause 6 Tests and test schedule

Annex ZA gives the normative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications. Figures and tables in Clauses 4 to 6 provide the interface drawings, dimensional data, and test arrangements that support the written requirements.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026?

Mating interface and interoperability

SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 defines the common mating dimensions for the Type 1 connector interface in Clause 4. The drawings are given in millimetres, and the shapes may vary as long as the specified dimensions stay unchanged. For unshielded versions, the document keeps the same basic mating geometry as the shielded versions, with only the shield-related dimensions differing.

This matters because interchangeability depends on the interface geometry, not just on the product name. Clause 4.1.2 states that compliance with the interface dimensions and the relevant signal integrity tests is what allows connectors from different sources to work together in the same category.

Separation from LC fibre optic connectors

Clause 4.1.2 also makes clear that Type 1 connectors have features that prevent intermateability with standard LC fibre optic connectors according to IEC 61754-20. The document uses the copper LC style form factor, but the copper connector and the fibre optic connector are not meant to mate.

In practice, this avoids accidental cross-use in mixed installations. Buyers and designers can use the LC-like shape as a visual cue, but still need to specify the connector type correctly.

Pin assignment and climatic classification

Clause 5.2 fixes the pin assignment for Type 1 connectors by reference to Figure 4b. Clause 5.3 then ties the connector to a climatic category compatible with the M I C E environment classification in ISO/IEC 11801-1, using the category stated in the document.

This matters for system design and qualification because the connector is not only an interface component. It must also fit the environmental conditions expected in the installation.

Electrical performance

Clause 5.4 covers creepage and clearance, voltage proof, current-temperature derating, contact resistance, input-to-output DC resistance, unbalanced DC resistance, and initial insulation resistance. Table 4 gives the minimum creepage and clearance distances for contacts to chassis and between adjacent contacts.

For users, this is the section that supports insulation, safety, and power-carrying checks. It tells the test laboratory and the product engineer what electrical properties must be measured and how the connector interface is expected to behave.

Transmission performance

Clause 5.5 sets the transmission characteristics. The standard uses category B for insertion loss, return loss, transverse conversion loss, transverse conversion transfer loss, power sum alien NEXT, and power sum alien FEXT. Shielded connectors also have requirements for transfer impedance and coupling attenuation.

This is the part that matters most for data performance. It tells the reader that signal integrity is not left to vendor claims - it is part of the connector qualification.

Mechanical performance and testing

Clause 5.6 covers mechanical operation, connector coupling devices, insertion and withdrawal forces, polarizing method, and dynamic stress. The document uses Mating Performance Level MPL750 and the latch connector style for the relevant mechanical checks.

Clause 6 then turns those characteristics into test practice. It includes example arrangements for resistance measurements and a vibration test setup, plus preconditioning and both basic and full test schedules.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 define?

  • Type 1 - The connector family covered by this detail specification for balanced single-pair data transmission.
  • copper LC style - An electrical connector with a form factor similar to LC fibre optic connectors, but not intermateable with them.
  • Insertion loss (IL) - The transmission loss through the connector interface.
  • Return loss (RL) - The amount of signal reflected back from the connector interface.
  • Transverse conversion loss (TCL) - A measure of how much imbalance converts differential signals into common-mode signals.
  • Transverse conversion transfer loss (TCTL) - A related balance and conversion measure used for transmission performance.
  • Mating Performance Level MPL750 - The mechanical operation level used for the connector mating performance requirement.
  • M I C E - The environment classification referenced through ISO/IEC 11801-1 for installation conditions.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026?

SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 is used by connector manufacturers, equipment makers, cable and cabling-system designers, test laboratories, and quality or procurement teams. It is relevant wherever balanced single-pair data transmission connectors must be specified, designed, qualified, or compared across suppliers.

In practice, these users rely on the standard to choose the connector interface, check interoperability, prepare data sheets, run qualification tests, and confirm that shielded or unshielded variants meet the intended application conditions.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 supersedes EN IEC 63171-1:2020 and all of its amendments and corrigenda, if any. The underlying IEC edition identifies these notable updates compared with the previous edition:

  • updated information on obtaining a license agreement
  • alignment of connector characteristics and test requirements with IEC 63171:2021 where applicable
  • added requirements for polarizing method and dynamic stress
  • added test group BP - Moisture to align with IEC 63171:2021

Which standards are used with SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026?

  • IEC 60050-581 - provides electromechanical vocabulary used for the terms and definitions.
  • IEC 60068-1 - provides general environmental testing guidance and supports the climatic classification.
  • IEC 60512-1 - provides the generic specification for connector tests and measurements.
  • IEC 61754-20 - gives the LC fibre optic connector family reference used to distinguish the copper LC style from fibre optic LC interfaces.
  • IEC 63171 - provides the general requirements and tests for the IEC 63171 series.
  • ISO/IEC 11801-1 - provides the generic cabling framework and the M I C E environment classification referenced in Clause 5.3.

What does the SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 document contain?

SIST EN IEC 63171-1:2026 contains connector overview drawings, mating-interface figures, pin detail drawings, and dimensional tables for the fixed and free connector parts. It also includes a table of creepage and clearance distances and a vibration test arrangement.

The document’s test section gives example measurement setups, preconditioning, and basic and full qualification schedules. Those schedules are used for design verification, laboratory testing, and product qualification of the connector family.

Annex ZA links the requirements to the corresponding European publications for the cited international standards.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
