Overview

kSIST FprEN 13075-2:2026 specifies a standardized method for the determination of the fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions. This important European draft standard, developed by the SIST (Slovenian Institute for Standardization) in cooperation with CEN, is part of a series focusing on the breaking behaviour of bitumens and bituminous binders. The document provides consistent procedures that help ensure reliable, repeatable, and comparable results for laboratories, researchers, and the construction industry.

Correctly determining the fines mixing time is essential for evaluating the workability and performance of cationic bituminous emulsions, which are widely used in road construction and maintenance. By following this standard, users can accurately assess the interaction between bitumen emulsions and mineral fillers, supporting quality control and product development.

Warning: Handling bituminous emulsions and associated laboratory equipment can be hazardous. Users are responsible for identifying hazards, assessing risk, and implementing appropriate safety measures and regulatory compliance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose

    • Method for determining the mixing time of mineral fines in diluted cationic bituminous emulsions under standardized laboratory conditions.
  • Standardized Procedure Highlights

    • Preparation and drying of fillers according to standard requirements.
    • Dilution of bituminous emulsion and controlled mixing with filler.
    • Measurement of the time taken until the mixture forms a pasty, non-adherent mass, representing the fines mixing or "breaking" point.
    • Reporting results as the arithmetic mean of at least two test results.
  • Apparatus and Tools

    • Use of precision laboratory equipment such as ovens, balances, spatulas, containers, timers, and constant temperature baths.
    • Reference fillers (Forshammer SE, Q92, Sikaisol) with defined particle size and chemical properties.
  • Safety and Quality Assurance

    • Emphasis on laboratory safety, quality control, and reporting of any deviations or unusual observations during testing.
    • Requirement to use standardized fillers and test methods for consistent results.

Applications

The determination of fines mixing time in cationic bituminous emulsions plays a pivotal role in:

  • Quality Control in Road Construction:

    • Ensures that bituminous emulsions deliver reliable performance when mixed with mineral fillers, directly impacting road durability and longevity.
    • Assists in verifying compliance of emulsions with project specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Product Development and Research:

    • Supports manufacturers and laboratories in optimizing emulsion formulations for enhanced workability and controlled breaking characteristics.
  • Laboratory Testing and Standardization:

    • Provides accredited laboratories with a harmonized framework for comparative assessments, calibration, and inter-laboratory consistency.
  • Specification and Procurement:

    • Enables engineers, contractors, and suppliers to specify and purchase materials that have been tested in accordance with recognized European standards, thereby minimizing risk.

Related Standards

For comprehensive guidance and supporting methods in bituminous binder testing, refer to:

  • EN 13075-1: Bitumens and bituminous binders - Determination of breaking behaviour - Part 1: Determination of breaking value of cationic bituminous emulsions, mineral filler method.
  • EN 58: Bitumen and bituminous binders - Sampling bituminous binders.

This document (prEN 13075-2:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 336 “Bitumens
and bituminous binders”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 13075-2:2016.
prEN 13075-2:2025 includes the following significant changes with respect to EN 13075-2:2016:
a) Clause 5, “Reagents and materials”: in paragraph 5.1 the naming “Caolin” for the Q92 filler, which
could lead to confusion with the mineralogical nature of kaolin, has been removed;
b) Clause 6, “Apparatus”, has been updated and revised, standardizing the use of the metrological
concept of “maximal permissible measurement error” for describing the measurement precision;
c) Annex A, “Characteristics of the reference fillers”, has been revised: the Sikaisol filler, which
production has been disrupted, has been downgraded to the third place in the reference fillers list;
d) in paragraph A2 the particle size distribution envelope of the Q92 filler has been updated and
tightened, thanks to the to process improvements brought by the producer.
A list of all parts in the EN 13075 series, published under the general title Bitumens and bituminous
binders — Determination of breaking behaviour, can be found on the CEN website.
