Overview

EN ISO 11378-2:2001/A1:2017 is Amendment 1 to the international and European standard for laboratory soiling tests on textile floor coverings (Part 2: Drum test). Approved by CEN in May 2017 and prepared by ISO/TC 219 (Floor coverings), this amendment refines materials specifications used in the drum test to improve reproducibility and harmonise test materials across laboratories.

This amendment:

  • Updates the specification for polyamide test pellets used in the drum test.
  • Includes a supplier note provided for users’ convenience (not an endorsement).

Key Topics

  • Material specification change: The amendment replaces the original volumetric description of polyamide pellets with a mass-based specification. The new requirement is polyamide pellets with a mass of (26 ± 5) mg per pellet. This change moves the test material definition from volume to mass to reduce variability in pellet selection and handling.

  • Documentation and conformity: The amendment is issued as EN ISO 11378-2:2001/A1:2017 and must be implemented into national standards under the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations. It is available in English, French and German official versions.

  • Supplier information: A specific supplier is cited in a footnote for convenience. ISO and CEN clarify that this information is not an endorsement and that users may source equivalent material meeting the specified mass tolerance.

Applications

This amendment directly affects stakeholders involved in:

  • Laboratory testing and certification: Test houses performing the drum test should update their material procurement and test records to reflect the mass-based pellet specification.
  • Product development and R&D: Manufacturers developing textile floor coverings will benefit from more consistent soiling simulation and comparable test results across labs.
  • Quality control and acceptance testing: Procurement teams and QC laboratories can use the clarified pellet mass to ensure repeatable soiling exposure for batch verification and performance comparison.

Practical benefits include improved repeatability of the drum test, fewer inter-laboratory discrepancies, and clearer procurement specifications for test materials.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 11378-2:2001 (original Part 2: Drum test) - this amendment modifies that document.
  • ISO/TC 219 outputs and other ISO methods for floor covering performance may be relevant for comprehensive test strategies.

For implementation, test laboratories should review their procedures and material contracts to ensure compliance with the mass tolerance for polyamide pellets and note the supplier information is informational only.
