Textile floor coverings - Determination of sensitivity to spilled water
This document specifies a method to determine the sensitivity of a textile floor covering for appearance change after water has been spilled and dried on the surface.
This change can be:
a) a colour change;
b) a change in structure;
c) migration and concentration of chemicals coming from the product.
NOTE A concentration of chemicals on a part of the surface can cause accelerated uneven soiling of textile floor coverings.
a) eine Farbveränderung;
b) eine Veränderung in der Struktur;
a) un changement de couleur ;
b) un changement de structure ;
c) une migration et une concentration de produits chimiques provenant du produit.
NOTE Une concentration de produits chimiques sur une partie de la surface peut provoquer une salissure irrégulière accélérée des revêtements de sol textiles.

Overview
EN 15115:2025 - Textile floor coverings: Determination of sensitivity to spilled water is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory method to evaluate appearance change of textile floor coverings after water has been spilled and dried on the surface. The standard addresses visible effects such as colour change, structural change, and migration or concentration of chemicals from the product that can lead to uneven soiling. EN 15115:2025 supersedes EN 15115:2006 and was approved by CEN in 2025.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Measures sensitivity of textile floor coverings to spilled water (appearance change).
- Specimens: Representative samples (minimum 300 × 300 mm) selected per ISO 1957; patterned or multi-construction coverings may require multiple specimens.
- Conditioning: Specimens conditioned flat in the standard atmosphere defined in EN ISO 139: (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 4) % RH for at least 24 h; testing in same atmosphere.
- Apparatus:
- Calibrated 100 ml measuring cylinder.
- Large grey scales (EN 20105‑A02) for visual grading.
- Demineralized water complying with Grade 3 of EN ISO 3696.
- Flat waterproof support and a stainless-steel ring (weight 750 g ± 250 g; inner diameter ≥ 100 mm; outer diameter ≤ 150 mm; height 15 ± 1 mm).
- Procedure:
- Slowly pour 100 ml (±1 ml) demineralized water from max 15 mm height into the ring within ~20 s so water is absorbed and does not overflow.
- Remove ring after absorption; let specimen dry on waterproof support in standard atmosphere for at least 48 h.
- Repeat for all specimens.
- Evaluation:
- Compare treated vs untreated area using large grey scales under viewing conditions in EN ISO 9405.
- Rotate each specimen through four 90° orientations; record the worst grading if differences occur. Result is the median of assessments.
- Test report: Must reference EN 15115:2025 and include product ID, history, individual results, median grade, atmosphere, specimen count and any deviations.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers: quality control and product development to assess water‑spill resistance and formulation effects (dye migration, finishes).
- Testing laboratories: standardized method for certification and comparative testing.
- Specifiers, architects and flooring installers: informed product selection for wet‑area risk management.
- Retailers and procurement: objective data for claims and performance communication.
- Standards bodies and regulators: harmonized basis for national standards and conformity.
