Overview

SIST EN 274-3:2002 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the quality control requirements for waste fittings used in sanitary appliances. This standard specifically applies to waste outlets, traps, and overflows for kitchen sinks, shower trays, washbasins, bidets, and baths connected to gravity drainage systems, regardless of the building's purpose. EN 274-3 ensures that these sanitary waste fittings conform to the performance and safety requirements set out in EN 274-1.

This standard plays a crucial role in maintaining high-quality manufacturing and consistent product reliability in sanitary installations, contributing to effective wastewater management and hygiene. It complements EN 274-1 (requirements) and EN 274-2 (test methods), together forming a comprehensive framework for waste fitting quality.

Key Topics

Quality Control Procedures

  • Type Testing: Manufacturers must perform type testing on three production specimens according to EN 274-2 test methods to confirm compliance with EN 274-1. Type testing is mandatory when a product design or material changes.
  • Factory Production Control (FPC): Continuous verification during manufacturing ensures ongoing compliance with EN 274-1. This involves visual inspections, dimensional checks, and material certification with specified control frequencies.

Factory Production Control Elements

  • Appearance and surface quality checks at least once every 24 hours.
  • Dimensional verification at production start and for each production lot.
  • Material compliance verified through manufacturer’s certificates upon delivery.
  • Proper documentation covering raw materials, manufacturing steps, and final product.
  • A quality plan incorporating inspection methods, frequency, and documentation practices, aligned with EN ISO 9001 quality management principles.
  • Procedures for document control, handling non-conforming products, customer complaints processing, and equipment calibration.

Third Party Control (Recommended)

EN 274-3 encourages independent certification and quality oversight via third party inspections:

  • Approval of type testing and factory production control system.
  • Periodic unannounced factory visits for product sampling and evaluation (typically twice yearly, reducing to once yearly after two years of conformance).
  • Detailed reporting including assessment of staff competence, facilities, conformity, quality control documentation, and complaint management.
  • Non-conformance management including retesting protocols and suspension of production if failures occur.

Applications

  • Sanitary Appliance Manufacturing: Ensures manufacturers produce waste fittings that meet strict quality and safety standards for consumer and commercial use.
  • Plumbing and Building Construction: Provides assurance that installed waste fittings in kitchens, bathrooms, and showers will perform reliably within gravity drainage systems.
  • Quality Assurance Programs: Supports manufacturers in establishing robust quality management systems compliant with European regulations and international best practices.
  • Certification Bodies and Inspectors: Offers a clear framework for auditing and certifying sanitary waste products.

By adhering to EN 274-3, manufacturers can improve product quality, reduce failure rates, and enhance customer satisfaction by guaranteeing that waste fittings meet uniform European criteria.
