Overview

oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 defines an analytical method for accurately determining the palladium content in jewellery and precious metal alloys using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) with an internal standard element. This standard, developed by SIST and aligned with ISO/DIS 11495:2026, is applicable to palladium alloys with nominal contents up to 990 parts per thousand (‰), including alloys classified under ISO 9202. It is a vital reference for laboratories, manufacturers, and assayers seeking reliable and repeatable palladium measurement in precious metal products.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Analysis: The procedure is suitable for homogeneous material samples with palladium content between 50 ‰ and 990 ‰. For higher purities, ISO 15093 is recommended.
  • ICP-OES with Internal Standard: The method uses ICP-OES, enhancing accuracy by employing a fixed-amount internal standard element, such as yttrium, scandium, indium, germanium, or lutetium. This corrects for instrument drift and potential matrix interference.
  • Bracketing Technique: Palladium determination is performed using a bracketing calibration sequence, where sample results are interpolated between two calibration standards closely matching the sample’s expected content.
  • Sample Preparation: Detailed procedures for dissolving the alloy sample, matrix matching, and preparation of calibration and sample solutions to ensure consistency and reliability.
  • Calculation and Results: Provides clear formulas for calculating palladium content, repeatability thresholds (duplicate results within 3‰), and criteria for reporting results.

Applications

  • Quality Control in Jewellery Manufacturing: Ensures finished products meet legal and commercial requirements for palladium content, supporting consumer trust and compliance with hallmarking regulations.
  • Assay Offices and Precious Metals Analysis: Enables accurate authentication and valuation of palladium alloys in official and commercial settings.
  • Laboratory Testing: Standardizes the analytical process, making results reliable and comparable across different labs and regions.
  • Trade and Certification: Supports international trade by providing a harmonized method recognized across the jewellery and precious metals industries.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Offers a validated reference for meeting local or international regulations concerning precious metals documentation and product labeling.

When implementing or referencing oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026, consider the following related standards:

  • ISO 9202: Jewellery and precious metals - Fineness of precious metal alloys.
  • ISO 11596: Procedures for sampling precious metals and their alloys.

Jewellery and precious metals — Determination of palladium
— ICP-OES method using an internal standard element
1 Scope
This document specifies an analytical method for the determination of palladium on a material considered
homogeneous. The palladium content of the samples lies preferably between 50 ‰ (parts per thousand)
and 990 ‰ (parts per thousand). Fineness above 990,0 ‰ can be determined using a spectroscopy method
by difference ISO 15093.
NOTE Lower contents of palladium can be analysed referring to this method.
2 Normative references

4 Principle
At least two accurately weighed samples are individually dissolved in aqua regia and made up to an exactly
weighed mass. These sample solutions are mixed with the internal standard and made up to the standard
measuring volume.
Using ICP-OES, the palladium content of the sample solution is measured by comparison of the ratio
intensities of the spectral emission of palladium and appropriate internal standard line(s) with the ratios for
solutions containing known masses of palladium and internal standard using the bracketing method.
Minor modifications are required when the alloy contains ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, or tungsten.
