Overview

SIST EN ISO 24018:2026 - Jewellery and precious metals - Specifications for 1 kilogram gold bar (ISO 24018:2020) - establishes harmonized, international requirements for producing, testing, and certifying 1-kilogram cast gold bars. This European Standard, adopted by CEN, provides valuable guidance for both investment and industrial markets (including jewelry and electronics sectors) to ensure quality, consistency, traceability, and market acceptance of gold kilobars. The standard covers all essential aspects, such as physical, chemical, and marking requirements, as well as testing, packaging, transportation, storage, and documentation.

Key Topics

  • Fineness and Chemical Composition
    • Defines permissible gold purity levels: 995, 999, 999.5, and 999.9 per thousand (‰).
    • Sets detailed impurity thresholds for high purity bars, ensuring consistent quality in line with the most recognized international practices.
  • Physical Specifications
    • Establishes acceptable mass (1,000.00 kg to 1,000.10 kg) and bar dimensions (length, width, thickness), eliminating ambiguity in production.
  • Surface Quality
    • Bars must be free from cavities and significant defects, with safe, smooth edges for handling.
  • Marking Requirements
    • Mandates robust and clear markings: manufacturer, metal type, mass, fineness, serial number, and optional details like year and assay marks.
  • Testing and Verification
    • Specifies batch and individual testing methods, referencing established ISO gold assay standards for compositional verification.
  • Security and Traceability
    • Allows for security features to deter counterfeiting, with conditions to ensure these do not affect critical characteristics.
  • Documentation and Certificates
    • Requires each bar to be accompanied by a certificate of analysis, offering transparency from manufacturer to end user.
  • Packaging, Transportation, and Storage
    • Provides recommendations for safe packaging (e.g., 25 bars per case) and handling to maintain bar integrity throughout the supply chain.

Applications

  • Investment Sector
    • Gold kilobars are a staple in the portfolios of private and institutional investors, prized for their international liquidity and standardization. SIST EN ISO 24018:2026 ensures that bars meet recognized quality benchmarks, supporting their acceptance on exchanges and in international trade.
  • Jewellery and Precious Metals Industry
    • Reliable specifications for casting, material quality, and dimensions allow jewelry makers and industrial users to confidently integrate gold bars into their processes, knowing they meet strict purity and consistency criteria.
  • Electronics and Industrial Applications
    • Industries requiring precise gold content benefit from the defined chemical composition and traceability, which streamlines sourcing and quality assurance for electronic components and other advanced manufacturing needs.
  • Customs, Vaults, and Logistics Providers
    • Clear compliance requirements aid customs and logistics operators in handling, verifying, and storing standardized gold bars, reducing risk and improving operational efficiency.

Related Standards

  • ISO 11426 – Jewellery - Determination of gold in gold jewellery alloys - Cupellation method (fire assay): Cited for analytical testing of gold fineness up to 999.5‰.
  • ISO 15093 – Jewellery and precious metals - Determination of high purity gold, platinum and palladium: Reference for difference method using ICP-OES for high-purity verification.
  • LBMA Good Delivery Rules – While focused on larger bars, these rules are referenced to position the 1 kg bar specification within the broader context of international gold trade.
  • ASTM B562-95 and SGEB2-2004 – Cited as commonly used standards for impurity specifications in other major gold markets, with SIST EN ISO 24018:2026 providing cross-compatibility.

SIST EN ISO 24018:2026 offers a robust foundation for harmonized gold bar production and trade, supporting secure, efficient, and transparent practices for the global jewellery, investment, and precious metals industries.
