Overview

EN 12441-6:2003 is a CEN European Standard that defines a flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) method for the chemical analysis of zinc and zinc alloys. The standard specifies procedures to determine aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) mass fractions in commercial zinc products (primary, secondary, castings, rolled products and foundry alloys). It is intended for quality control and conformity testing in laboratories using FAAS instrumentation.

Keywords: EN 12441-6:2003, zinc alloys chemical analysis, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, FAAS, aluminium determination, iron determination, CEN standard

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Applicable to products covered by EN 988, EN 1179, EN 1774, EN 12844 and EN 13283.
  • Determination ranges: Aluminium 0.0005 % to 0.5 % (mass fraction); Iron 0.001 % to 0.5 % (mass fraction).
  • Analytical principle: Dissolution of sample in hydrochloric acid, atomisation in an air–acetylene or nitrous oxide–acetylene flame and measurement by FAAS. Spectral lines: Al - 309.3 nm; Fe - 248.3 nm.
  • Reagents & sample preparation: Use analytical-grade reagents, demineralised water; glassware cleaned with boiling aqua regia. Typical test portion: 10 g for routine analysis; 25 g and a precipitation/filtration procedure for Al in the very low range.
  • Calibration & measurement: Preparation of matrix-matched calibration solutions, use of zinc carrier and lanthanum where specified, alternate readings to ensure burner stability.
  • Quality and reporting: Results expressed as % by mass; test report must identify sample, method reference, individual and mean values, unusual occurrences and laboratory identification.

Applications

  • Quality control in zinc smelting and refining, foundries and manufacturers of rolled zinc products.
  • Regulatory and conformity testing to ensure compliance with product specifications in construction, galvanizing and die-casting supply chains.
  • Metallurgical and analytical laboratories performing routine or contract testing of zinc alloys for Al and Fe content using FAAS.

Who should use this standard

  • Materials testing laboratories, QA/QC teams in zinc production and casting facilities, third‑party conformity assessors, and instrument specialists implementing FAAS for alloy analysis.

Related standards

  • EN 12441 series (other parts cover titrimetric or spectrophotometric methods and other elements: Parts 1–11).
  • Referenced product standards: EN 988, EN 1179, EN 1774, EN 12844, EN 13283 for applicability and result expression.

This concise summary helps laboratories and technical buyers understand the practical use of EN 12441-6:2003 for accurate aluminium and iron analysis in zinc alloys using flame atomic absorption spectrometry.
