SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 is a draft amendment to the standard for gas cylinders - quick-release cylinder valves - specification and type testing, published by SIST and aligned with ISO/TC 58/SC 2 work. It updates the specification and type-testing rules for quick-release cylinder valves, with changes to scope notes, pressure and leak-tightness testing, and permanent marking. Manufacturers, test laboratories, quality managers and conformity assessors use it to check valve design and test plans against the revised references.

What does SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 specify?

SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 specifies amendments to ISO 17871:2020 for quick-release cylinder valves. The amendment keeps the document focused on the valve as a closure and updates the linked standards and test language used for type testing and marking.

The changes are organized as clause-by-clause replacements in Clause 1, 2, 4.1 to 4.2.11, 5, and Annex A references. In practice, that means the amendment is read together with the base standard, because it changes selected requirements rather than replacing the whole document.

The scope note added by the amendment also points readers to related requirements for fixed fire-fighting systems and residual pressure valves (RPV). That matters because some valve uses need extra rules beyond this document.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026?

SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 makes the valve requirements more specific about where the standard applies, which tests are needed, and how valves are marked before service.

  • Clause 1 limits the document to the valve function as a closure. Other functions integrated into the valve may be covered by other standards, but those are not requirements of this document. In practice, a multifunction valve must be checked against any separate standards that apply to its other functions.
  • Clause 4.1 says quick-release cylinder valves shall comply with ISO 10297:2024, ISO 17879:2026 or ISO 23826:2021, as applicable, except Clause 8 of ISO 23826, unless this document gives different or extra requirements. In practice, the applicable base standard has to be identified before type testing starts.
  • Clause 4.2.1 covers a separated valve filling connection with a non-return valve. The non-return valve shall meet the ISO 10297:2024 requirements, while the endurance cycles are set by the manufacturer. That means the manufacturer must define and justify the cycle count.
  • Clause 4.2.5 sets the total external leakage limit at 12 cm3/h when the test is carried out. In practice, leakage above that level means the design or build does not pass.
  • Clauses 4.2.7 and 4.2.9 deal with valve hydraulic test pressure and hydraulic pressure test. For extinguishing agents charged with compressed gases, the hydraulic pressure test pressure is based on 1.5 times p_vt, and the manufacturer must show that the valve body can withstand the required pressure. That is the proof that the body is strong enough for service.
  • Clause 4.2.10 relaxes or limits several leak-tightness tests depending on design and application. Some internal leak tests are not required, the 10 bar internal leak test applies only to quick-release cylinder valves designed for intermittent discharge, and some transport-and-storage or -40 °C tests are waived for quick-release cylinder valves used only in fixed fire-fighting systems installed in covered areas when the minimum exposure temperature is -20 °C. For valves with open operating mechanisms during standby, the external leak-tightness test applies only in the fully open position.
  • Clause 5 requires permanent and legible marking before service by physical methods such as forging, etching, hard metal stamping, engraving, pin stamping, laser etching or equivalent methods, and not by adhesive labels. The markings must be separated by at least one space. In practice, the valve must stay identifiable throughout its life.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 define?

  • Quick-release cylinder valve - A gas cylinder valve intended for rapid release, with this amendment focusing on its closure function.
  • Non-return valve - A one-way valve used in a separated valve filling connection to prevent reverse flow.
  • Intermittent discharge - A service mode where discharge happens in periods, which triggers a specific internal leak-tightness test.
  • Valve hydraulic test pressure (p_vht) - The hydraulic pressure used to demonstrate that the valve body can withstand the required load.
  • Residual pressure valves (RPV) - A valve category with additional requirements given in ISO 15996.
  • Type A - A valve type for which the internal and external leak-tightness tests before the endurance test are not required.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026?

SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 is used by valve manufacturers, gas cylinder suppliers, test laboratories, quality managers, certification bodies and regulators. It is also relevant to designers and installers of fixed fire-fighting systems because some test waivers and extra requirements depend on that application. These users rely on it for design verification, type testing, marking checks and conformity assessment.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 from the previous edition?

This amendment revises ISO 17871:2020. The stated changes include:

  • a new scope note limiting the document to the closure function of a quick-release cylinder valve
  • a note pointing to additional requirements for fixed fire-fighting systems in ISO 16003 and EN 12094-4, and for RPV in ISO 15996
  • updated references to ISO 10297:2024 and ISO 17879:2026
  • revised wording for non-return valve, endurance, leakage and hydraulic test provisions
  • new and revised leak-tightness exceptions and the 12 cm3/h external leakage limit
  • updated marking wording and updated Annex A references to Annex E of ISO 17879:2026

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026?

  • ISO 10297:2024 - Provides applicable valve requirements, test methods and tables used throughout the amendment.
  • ISO 17879:2026 - Provides another applicable set of valve requirements, test methods and tables for comparison and substitution.
  • ISO 23826:2021 - Provides an alternative applicable basis, except Clause 8, and is referenced for leak-tightness and hydraulic test wording.
  • ISO 16003 - Gives extra requirements for quick-release cylinder valves used in fixed fire-fighting systems.
  • EN 12094-4 - Gives regional extra requirements for fixed fire-fighting systems.
  • ISO 15996 - Gives extra requirements for residual pressure valves (RPV).

What does the SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 contains clause-by-clause replacement text rather than a full rewrite. It updates the scope note, reference list, performance and leak-tightness clauses, hydraulic pressure wording, marking requirements and annex references.

The amendment points users to test tables in ISO 10297:2024, ISO 17879:2026 and ISO 23826:2021, so laboratories can select the correct test conditions. It also points to Annex E of ISO 17879:2026 in the updated annex references.

For design, testing, certification and audits, the practical value is in the exact wording that tells users which tests apply, which tests can be waived, and how the valve must be marked before entering service.
