Overview

SIST EN 12848:2009, published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), specifies a laboratory method for determining the mixing stability of bitumen emulsions with cement. This standard is essential for quality control and performance assessment of bituminous emulsions used in civil engineering and road construction. SIST EN 12848:2009 applies specifically to overstabilized cationic bitumen emulsions and to slow-setting and overstabilized anionic bitumen emulsions. By following this standard, professionals can assess the compatibility and performance of bituminous binders when mixed with cement under controlled conditions.

Key compliance note: This standard may involve hazardous materials and operations. It is the user's responsibility to ensure appropriate safety and regulatory practices are in place before implementation.

Key Topics

  • Mixing stability with cement: Defines the test method for evaluating the amount of coagulated material produced when bituminous emulsions are mixed with cement.
  • Applicable materials: Overstabilized cationic bitumen emulsions, slow-setting and overstabilized anionic bitumen emulsions, and Portland cement (CEM I, type R).
  • Laboratory procedures: Step-by-step instructions for sample preparation, mixing, sieving, drying, and weighing to consistently measure mixing stability.
  • Repeatability and reproducibility: Guidelines for ensuring reliable test results, including tolerances for variation between test runs and different laboratories.
  • Test reporting: Essential information to include such as sample identification, reference to SIST EN 12848:2009, and recorded results.

Applications

The SIST EN 12848:2009 standard is widely used in the construction and materials testing industry to:

  • Assess compatibility: Evaluate if specific bitumen emulsions are suitable for use in combination with cement for road construction and surface treatments.
  • Enhance mix design: Provide reliable data to inform mix formulations for bituminous binders and pavement applications.
  • Quality assurance: Support manufacturers and laboratories in certifying that products consistently meet European performance criteria.
  • Research and development: Facilitate comparative studies and product improvements by providing a standardized testing framework.

Common application scenarios include:

  • Road and highway engineering projects
  • Quality control laboratories
  • Bituminous binder and emulsion production facilities
  • Infrastructure maintenance and repair planning

Related Standards

For comprehensive evaluation and oversight, SIST EN 12848:2009 is commonly referenced alongside other European and international standards, including:

  • EN 58: Bitumen and bituminous binders - Sampling bituminous binders
  • EN 197-1: Cement - Composition, specifications and conformity criteria for common cements
