Welding - Acceptance inspection of electron beam welding machines - Part 5: Measurement of run-out accuracy (ISO 14744-5:2000)
This standard is intended for use when the run-out accuracy of the moving parts of electron beam welding machines
complying with EN ISO 14744-1 is to be measured in connection with an acceptance inspection. It provides
information on the procedure and apparatus to be used for making the measurements. Given the great variety of
electron beam welding machines, the scope of measurements required for acceptance inspection purposes should be
specified separately for the machine concerned.
Run-out accuracy as defined here is a systematic error and thus counts as one of the parameters by which the
performance of a machine tool can be characterized. Other factors influencing performance (e.g. dynamic forces,
vacuum level, positioning accuracy of CNC machines) and methods of statistical evaluation are not covered in this
standard.
Electron beam welding involves movement of the workpiece and/or of the electron gun. Successful welding
presupposes that this movement is effected by the devices concerned (e.g. work table and rotating fixture) with a
given degree of accuracy. The purpose of the measurement is thus to check whether and to what extent the required
run-out accuracy is maintained.

Overview - EN ISO 14744-5:2000 (CEN)
EN ISO 14744-5:2000 - "Welding - Acceptance inspection of electron beam welding machines - Part 5: Measurement of run-out accuracy" specifies how to measure the run-out accuracy of moving parts on electron beam welding machines (those complying with EN ISO 14744-1). The standard is intended for acceptance inspection and provides guidance on the measurement procedure and the apparatus to be used. It focuses on run-out accuracy as a systematic geometric error that characterizes machine tool performance; it does not cover dynamic forces, vacuum level, CNC positioning statistics, or statistical evaluation methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of measurement: Applies when run-out accuracy of moving parts (e.g., work table, rotating fixtures, electron gun movement systems) must be verified during acceptance inspection.
- Run-out accuracy definition: Treated as a systematic error parameter used to characterize machine guidance or geometric precision.
- Procedures and apparatus: The document describes the types of measurement procedures and measuring apparatus appropriate for run-out checks (details and selection depend on machine design and configuration).
- Machine-specific planning: Because electron beam welding machines vary widely, the exact scope and points of measurement for acceptance inspection should be specified separately for each machine.
- Excluded factors: Does not address other performance influences such as dynamic forces, vacuum level effects, CNC positioning accuracy, or statistical evaluation methods.
Practical applications
- Acceptance inspection and factory acceptance tests (FAT) of electron beam welding machines.
- Commissioning checks to verify that moving components meet required run-out tolerances before production welding.
- Quality assurance for welding shops and OEMs that need to confirm mechanical guidance accuracy for repeatable electron beam welds.
- Basis for specifying contractual acceptance criteria between machine suppliers and purchasers.
Who uses this standard
- Machine manufacturers and design engineers specifying acceptance tests.
- Quality and inspection engineers performing run-out measurements.
- Welding engineers concerned with geometric accuracy affecting weld quality.
- Test laboratories and third-party inspectors carrying out machine acceptance.
