This Standard specifies a method for determining the non-volatile matter by volume (NVV) of coating materials by determining the practical dry-film density. This method determines the volume percentage of non-volatile matter in paints, varnishes and related products by measuring the density of a dry coating for any specified temperature range and period of drying or curing. The non-volatile matter content is determined in accordance with ISO 3251. Using the non-volatile matter by volume results obtained in accordance with this document, it is possible to calculate the practical spreading rate of coating materials. This method specifies an additional shape of plate to those described in ISO 3233-1 and is suitable for all products which can be applied by dipping. This document is not applicable to coating materials which exceed the Critical Pigment Volume Concentration (CPVC). Annex A gives an overview of the existing methods for the determination of non-volatile matter content and of non-volatile matter volume.

Dieses Dokument legt ein Verfahren zum Ermitteln des Volumens der nichtflüchtigen Anteile (VnfA) von Beschichtungsstoffen durch die Bestimmung der praktischen Trockenfilmdichte fest. Bei diesem Verfahren wird das Volumen der nichtflüchtigen Anteile von Beschichtungsstoffen und ähnlichen Produkten durch Messen der Dichte der trockenen Beschichtung bei einer festgelegten Temperatur und für eine bestimmte Trocknungs-/Härtungsdauer bestimmt. Der Gahlt an nichtflüchtigen Anteilen wird nach ISO 3251 bestimmt.
Aus den nach diesem Dokument erhaltenen Ergebnissen des VnfA kann die praktische Ergiebigkeit von Beschichtungsstoffen berechnet werden.
Dieses Verfahren legt im Vergleich mit ISO 3233-1 eine weitere Form der Probenplatte fest und ist für alle Produkte anwendbar, die durch Tauchen aufgetragen werden können.
Dieses Dokument ist nicht anwendbar für Beschichtungsstoffe, die die kritische Pigment¬volumen¬kon¬zen-tration (KPVK) überschreiten.

Le présent document spécifie une méthode permettant de mesurer la teneur en volume de matière non volatile (NVv) de produits de peinture par détermination de la masse volumique pratique du feuil sec. Cette méthode détermine le pourcentage en volume de matière non volatile dans les peintures, vernis et produits assimilés par mesurage de la masse volumique d'un revêtement sec pour toute gamme de température et toute période de séchage ou de polymérisation spécifiées. La teneur en matière non volatile est déterminée conformément à l'ISO 3251.
La teneur en volume de matière non volatile déterminée conformément au présent document permet de calculer le rendement pratique d'application de produits de peinture.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 3233-2:2014), which has been technically
revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— the definitions and sources in Clause 3 have been updated;
— a minimum mass of 25 mg of the coating on the plate has been added in 7.2.2, because measurements
and simulation calculations demonstrate the need for a minimum mass for the coated panel.

SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 3233-2:2014), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— a general reference to ISO 4618 has been added to the introduction of Clause 3;
— the definitions and sources have been updated in Clause 3;
— a minimum mass of 25 mg of the coating on the plate has been added in Clause 7.2.2, because
measurements and simulation calculations demonstrate the need for a minimum mass for the
coated panel.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 3233 specifies a method for determining the non-volatile matter by volume (NV ) of

coating materials by determining the practical dry-film density. This method determines the volume
percentage of non-volatile matter in paints, varnishes and related products by measuring the density of
a dry coating for any specified temperature range and period of drying or curing.
Using the non-volatile matter by volume results obtained in accordance with this part of ISO 3233, it is
possible to calculate the practical spreading rate of coating materials.
This method specifies an additional shape of plate to those described in ISO 3233-1 and is suitable for
all products which can be applied by dipping.
This part of ISO 3233 is not applicable to coating materials which exceed the critical pigment volume
concentration (CPVC).
