Overview
SIST EN 12637-3:2004 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the test method to assess the compatibility of injection products with elastomeric polymeric inserts used in concrete structures. This standard focuses specifically on evaluating the effect that hardening and hardened injection products have on elastomers embedded in concrete cracks or voids. Designed for use in the protection and repair of concrete structures, the test ensures that polymeric inserts retain their essential mechanical properties when exposed to such injection materials.
The standard is applicable when polymeric inserts, such as waterproofing membranes, joint sealers, cables, or pipes, are likely to interact with injection products during repair processes. It provides a controlled, replicable method to determine whether the polymeric insert maintains its integrity and performance after contact with curing injection substances.
Key Topics
Test Specimen Preparation
Circular polymeric inserts (typically 155 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness) are sampled from actual products or prepared with adjustments for non-standard geometries. Surfaces are abraded to ensure consistency.Injection Product Application
Injection products are mixed following manufacturer instructions, then applied as a uniform layer (approximately 5 mm thick) onto the polymeric insert specimen immediately after mixing. The assembly is cured within a sealed chamber to avoid volatile loss.Conditioning and Exposure Times
Specimens undergo exposure at standard laboratory conditions (21 ± 2 °C and 60 ± 10% relative humidity) for specified lengths of time - typically 28 days and 70 days - ensuring interaction with both the hardening and fully hardened injection product.Mechanical and Visual Evaluation
Post-exposure, specimens are assessed for:- Visual changes such as discoloration, softening, hardening, surface degradation or partial dissolution
- Change in mass, reported as a percentage relative to initial mass
- Changes in tensile strength and elongation in line with EN ISO 527 plastic and rubber testing standards.
Test Apparatus
Includes a base plate, open-ended chamber, plugs, and fixtures to maintain tight contact between the injection product and the polymeric insert throughout curing.Reporting Requirements
Detailed results documentation including original and aged specimen properties, testing conditions, deviations, and apparatus calibration, ensuring traceability and reproducibility.
Applications
SIST EN 12637-3:2004 primarily serves professionals involved in the protection, repair, and rehabilitation of concrete structures, particularly where injection products are employed to fill cracks, voids, or for structural reinforcement. Key application areas include:
Structural Crack Injection
Ensuring that polymeric inserts such as elastomeric seals do not degrade when exposed to chemical constituents of injection resins or cementitious products.Waterproofing Systems
Verifying that waterproof membranes interfacing with injection materials remain impermeable and mechanically sound after exposure.Infrastructure Maintenance
Applicable in bridges, tunnels, dams, and other civil engineering works where crack repair prolongs structural lifespan.Quality Control for Product Manufacturers
Providing a standardized test to certify elastomeric components' resistance to material interactions with injection products under service conditions.
Related Standards
EN 12637-3 forms part of the wider EN 12637 series covering products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures. Key related documents include:
- EN 1504-1:1998 – Definitions, requirements, quality control, and conformity evaluation for concrete repair products.
- prEN 1504-5:2001 – Covers methods and products related to concrete injections, complementing compatibility testing with injection materials.
- EN ISO 527 – Plastic materials tensile testing standards used for measuring the mechanical properties of polymeric inserts.
- ISO 5893 – Guidelines for tensile, flexural, and compression tensile testing equipment relevant to elastomers.
By aligning with these standards, EN 12637-3 helps ensure a comprehensive approach to material compatibility testing, fostering durability and reliability in concrete repair and protection systems.
