Page 5ETS 300 609-4 (GSM 11.26 version 5.2.1): March 1999ForewordThis European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) has been produced by the Special Mobile Group(SMG) Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) describes the Radio Frequency (RF) tests forGSM 900 and DCS 1800 repeaters within the digital cellular telecommunications system(Phase 2/Phase 2+).The contents of this ETS may be subject to continuing work within SMG and may change following formalSMG approval. Should SMG modify the contents of this ETS, it will be resubmitted for OAP by ETSI withan identifying change of release date and an increase in version number as follows:Version 5.x.ywhere:5Indicates GSM Phase 2+xthe second digit is incremented for all other types of changes, i.e. technical enhancements, corrections, updates, etc.ythe third digit is incremented when editorial only changes have been incorporated in thespecification;Transposition datesDate of adoption of this ETS:4 December 1998Date of latest announcement of this ETS (doa):31 March 1999Date of latest publication of new National Standardor endorsement of this ETS (dop/e):30 September 1999Date of withdrawal of any conflicting National Standard (dow):30 September 1999SIST ETS 300 609-4 E4:2003

Page 7ETS 300 609-4 (GSM 11.26 version 5.2.1): March 19991ScopeThis European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) describes the Radio Frequency (RF) tests forGSM 900 and DCS 1800 repeaters which receive, amplify, and retransmit a received Mobile Station (MS)signal in the GSM MS transmit band and simultaneously receive, amplify and retransmit a received BaseTransceiver Station (BTS) RF signal in the GSM BTS transmit band. This ETS is applicable to repeaters meeting the requirements of either GSM Phase 2 or GSM Phase 2+.Unless otherwise stated, all tests are applicable to repeaters meeting Phase 2 and/or Phase 2+ GSMrequirements, because the requirements of the Phase 2 and Phase 2+ core GSM specifications which arereferenced in the test are consistent. Most differences between Phase 2 and Phase 2+ requirementsrepresent Phase 2+ features which are optional for the BSS to support.2Normative referencesThis ETS incorporates by dated and undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listedhereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publicationsapply to this ETS only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, thelatest edition of the publication referred to applies.[1]ETR 350 (GSM 01.04): "Digital cellular telecommunication system (Phase 2+);Abbreviations and acronyms".[2]ETS 300 019-1-0: "Equipment Engineering (EE): Environmental conditions andenvironmental tests for telecommunications equipment Part 1-0; Classificationof environmental conditions; Introduction".[3]ETS 300 019-1-3: "Equipment Engineering (EE): Environmental conditions andenvironmental tests for telecommunications equipment Part 1-3; Classificationof environmental conditions, Stationary use at weather-protected locations".[4]ETS 300 019-1-4: "Equipment Engineering (EE): Environmental conditions andenvironmental tests for telecommunications equipment Part 1-4; Classificationof environmental conditions, Stationary use at non-weather-protected locations".[5]ETS 300 113: "Radio Equipment and Systems (RES); Land mobile service;Technical characteristics and test conditions for radio equipment intended forthe transmission of data (and speech) and having an antenna connector".[6]ETS 300 910 (GSM 05.05): "Digital cellular telecommunication system(Phase 2+); Radio transmission and reception".[7]IEC 68-2: "Basic environmental testing procedures: Part 2 Tests".[8]IEC 721: "Classification of environmental conditions".[9]ETS 300 607-1 (GSM 11.10-1) "Digital cellular telecommunication system(Phase 2); Mobile Station (MS) conformance specification;Part 1: Conformancespecification".[10]ETS 300 609-1 (GSM 11.21) "Digital cellular telecommunication system(Phase 2); Base Station System (BSS) equipment specification; Part 1: Radioaspects"[11]ETR 027: ”Methods of measurement for private mobile radio equipment “[12]ETR 028: “Uncertainties in the measurement of mobile radio equipmentcharacteristics”SIST ETS 300 609-4 E4:2003

Page 8ETS 300 609-4 (GSM 11.26 version 5.2.1): March 19993Definitions and abbreviations3.1DefinitionsFor the purposes of this ETS, the following definitions apply:broadband repeater: A repeater which is designed for operation on any combination of ARFCNs (up to aspecified maximum number) within the operating band of the repeater.channelized repeater: A repeater which is designed for operation on a specified subset of ARFCNswithin the operating band of the repeater. The subset of ARFCNs may be determined during themanufacture of the repeater, or may be programmable.Repeater system using frequency shift: A frequency shifting repeater consists of two differentelements, a master unit close to the BTS and at least one remote unit close to the area to be covered. The master unit amplifies the channels from the BTS and shifts them to different GSM channels. In theremote unit the shifted channels from the master unit will be transferred back to the original channels andamplified. This is valid for the downlink signals as well as for the uplink signals.GSM: Unless otherwisespecified, references to GSM include both GSM 900 and DCS 1800.repeater: A bi-directional Radio Frequency (RF) amplifier which can amplify and transmit a receivedMobile Station (MS) signal in the GSM MS transmit band, simultaneously it can amplify and transmit areceived Base Transceiver Station (BTS) RF signal in the GSM BTS transmit band.spurious emissions: Emissions at frequencies other than those of the carrier and sidebands associatedwith normal modulation and switching.3.2AbbreviationsFor the purposes of this ETS, the following abbreviations apply:BTSBase Transceiver StationMSMobile StationRFRadio FrequencyAbbreviations used within the GSM specifications are given in ETR 350 (GSM 01.04) [1].4GeneralA repeater can be designed to amplify the whole transmit RF band or just a part of the band. In the lattercase the repeater can be either Broadband, with frequency band selective filtering, or channelized, withchannel selective filtering.4.1Radio frequency bandsA repeater, as a bi-directional amplifier, can amplify and transmit a received MS signal in the MS transmitband, simultaneously it can amplify and transmit a received BTS signal in the BTS transmit band. Therelevant MS and BTS transmit bands, as defined in GSM 05.05 [6], are given in table 1.Table 1: MS and BTS transmit RF bandsMS transmit bandBTS transmit bandP-GSM 900890 - 915 MHz935 - 960 MHzE-GSM 900880 - 915 MHz925 - 960 MHzDCS 18001710 - 1785 MHz1805 - 1880 MHzR-GSM 900876 - 915 MHz921 - 960 MHzSIST ETS 300 609-4 E4:2003

Page 9ETS 300 609-4 (GSM 11.26 version 5.2.1): March 1999NOTE:In some circumstances, for instance when an operator (or more than one operator whoco-ordinate the use of repeaters), is not allocated a complete band as defined intable 1, it may be necessary to restrict the frequency range of operations of repeaters. In these circumstances, the test of
"Gain outside operating band" in annex A may beused to verify the performance of the repeater.4.2Test environmentsFor each test in this ETS, the environmental conditions under which the repeater is to be tested aredefined.4.2.1Normal test environmentWhen a normal test environment is specified for a test, the test should be performed under anycombination of conditions between the minimum and maximum limits stated in table 2.Table 2: Limits of conditions for Normal Test EnvironmentConditionMinimumMaximumBarometric pressure86 kPa106 kPaTemperature15 ºC30 ºCRelative Humidity20 %85 %Power supplyNominal, as declared by the manufacturerVibrationNegligibleThe ranges of barometric pressure, temperature and humidity represent the maximum variation expectedin the uncontrolled environment of a test laboratory. If it is not possible to maintain these parameterswithin the specified limits, the actual values shall be recorded in the test report.NOTE:This may, for instance, be the case for measurements of radiated emissionsperformed on an open field test site.4.2.2Extreme test environmentThe manufacturer shall declare one of the following:a)The e
