Overview

EN 3848:2001 - Aerospace series - Semi‑finished metallic products - Methods of measuring form deviations is a CEN/AECMA European standard that defines how to measure deviations from the nominal form for semi‑finished metallic products used in aerospace applications. It provides measurement procedures, required measuring conditions and definitions of common form defects for sheets, plates, bars and tubes. The standard excludes extruded sections (see EN 2066) and folded sections (see EN 2065).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to semi‑finished metallic products for aerospace use; not for extruded or folded profiles.
  • Measuring condition
    • Use measuring instruments whose accuracy matches the dimension and tolerance involved.
    • Measurements should be made at workshop or laboratory ambient temperature; in case of dispute, use 15 °C to 25 °C.
    • Surface plates must be flat to within 1% of the requisite product form deviation being measured.
  • Measurement methods per product type
    • Sheet and plate
      • Squareness: measured from the difference in diagonal lengths (AA and BB).
      • Lateral curvature: measured with the sheet resting on a horizontal surface plate.
      • Flatness: tolerance zone defined per ISO 1101; deviation from flatness (arching, buckling, edge waves) measured with a lightweight straight‑edge and feeler gauge, dial gauge or scale.
    • Round bar and circular tube
      • Straightness: deviation per metre and on specified lengths measured with the bar/tube on a surface plate positioned to minimize deviation.
      • Roundness: difference between maximum and minimum diameter at the same cross‑section.
      • Tube eccentricity: half the difference between maximum and minimum wall thickness at a cross‑section.
    • Hexagonal, square and rectangular bars
      • Straightness and twist: measured on a horizontal plate minimizing deviation; twist is the maximum distance between the bottom surface and plate along the length.
      • Surface flatness and squareness: measured on faces and across flats as illustrated in the standard.
  • Normative references
    • Incorporates ISO 1101 for geometrical tolerancing and references EN 2065 and EN 2066 for excluded profile types.

Applications and users

  • Practical for: aerospace manufacturers, metallurgical inspection labs, quality engineers, procurement specialists and suppliers of aluminium and other metallic semi‑finished products for aircraft and spacecraft.
  • Use cases:
    • Incoming inspection of sheet, plate, bar and tube stock.
    • Verifying conformity to aerospace dimensional tolerances.
    • Preparing technical inspection plans and supplier quality agreements.

Related standards

  • EN 2065 - Folded profiles (excluded by EN 3848)
  • EN 2066 - Extruded sections (excluded by EN 3848)
  • ISO 1101 - Geometrical tolerancing (referenced for flatness and tolerance zones)
