Overview
EN 17723:2024 - "Plant biostimulants - Determination of chloride" is a CEN standard that specifies a potentiometric titration method to quantify chloride (Cl‑) in plant biostimulants. The method applies whether organic material is present or absent and is suitable for biostimulant products and blends where the plant biostimulant component is the largest fraction. This standard supports compliance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 and provides a harmonized procedure for laboratories, manufacturers and regulators to report chloride content (g/kg fresh matter and g/kg dry matter).
Keywords: EN 17723:2024, plant biostimulants, chloride determination, potentiometric method, silver nitrate titration, EU fertilising products.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to pure plant biostimulants and blends where plant biostimulants are the highest % by mass/volume (or by dry mass for liquids). If another category dominates the blend, the respective standard applies.
- Analytical principle: Soluble chloride is extracted with water acidified by nitric acid and titrated with 0.1 mol/L silver nitrate. The end point is determined potentiometrically using a silver ion-selective electrode with a reference electrode or a combined electrode.
- Reagents and conditions:
- Use chloride‑free water (conductivity ≤ 0.2 mS/m at 25 °C).
- Nitric acid for acidified extraction; silver nitrate standard solution c = 0.1 mol/L (commercial or standardized - Annex A).
- Measurement temperature recommended at 25 °C ± 2 °C.
- Apparatus and procedure:
- Potentiometer (0.1 mV resolution), electrodes, stirrer, class A volumetric glassware and burettes/automatic pipettes.
- Typical test portion: 1–10 g sample, extracted with 50 mL water + 5 mL nitric acid, stirred 30 min; titrate with 0.1 mL increments (smaller near equivalence).
- Perform blank and recovery tests; correct results for recovery < 95 %.
- Results and precision: Results reported as average of two replicates and convertible to dry-matter basis using EN 17704:2024 dry matter determination. Precision data provided in Annex C; equivalence-point refinement available in Annex B.

3.1
chloride content of plant biostimulants
mass fraction of chlorides, expressed in g/kg of dry matter, determined in accordance with the procedure
described in this document
4 Sampling
Sampling is not part of this method specified in this document. For sampling EN 17702-1:2024, shall be
applied.
Laboratory sample preparation shall be carried out in accordance with EN 17702-2:2024. Homogeneous
samples should be used.
An example of such a blend is a product with 2 claimed functions consisting of a non-microbial plant biostimulant
and an organic fertilizer composed of 1 kg/kg of plant biostimulant from seaweed
5 Principle
5.1 General
Soluble chlorides are extracted from the sample with water containing nitric acid. The chloride content
of the solution is titrated with silver nitrate standard solution. The end point is determined
potentiometrically by using either a silver ion selective electrode plus a reference electrode or a
combined electrode.
5.2 Interferences
-
Maintaining the sample at a lower pH can avoid the silver ion from interacting with OH to precipitate as
silver oxide (Ag O), it can minimize the interference of other anions with AgCl formation, and it can
improve the binding between the titrant and the analyte.
6 Reagents
Only reagents of recognized analytical grade shall be used.
6.1 Water.
Water with a specific conductivity not higher than 0,2 mS/m at 25 °C ± 2 °C and free from chlorides shall
be used.
6.2 Nitric acid solution.
1:1 concentrated nitric acid (70 % w/v) shall be diluted in water (6.1).
6.3 Silver nitrate standard solution, c = 0,1 mol/l solution.
A silver nitrate solution of 0,1 mol/l in water (6.1) shall be prepared. Many ready-to-use silver nitrate
solutions are commercially available with the certified concentration or an in-house solution can be
prepared and standardized: in this case the instructions in Annex A shall be followed.
7 Apparatus
Normally, automatic titrators are used. This method describes manual titrations.
Ordinary laboratory equipment and the following shall be used:
7.1 Electromagnetic stirrer and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coated magnetic bars.
7.2 Glass burettes class A [2], with a reading accuracy of 0,02 ml, or automatic pipettes with a reading
accuracy of 0,002 ml.
7.3 One-mark volumetric glass flasks Class A [3], capacities 150 ml, 500 ml and 1 000 ml and a
graduated glass flask Class A, capacity 100 ml.
7.4 Glass beaker [4], capacity 300 ml.
7.5 Glass conical (Erlenmeyer) flask, capacity 250 ml.
7.6 Potentiometer, with a reading accuracy of 0,1 mV, equipped with an electrode suitable for the
measurement of chloride (e.g. a silver electrode) and a reference electrode (e.g. a mercury(I) sulfate
electrode). Alternatively, use a suitable combination electrode.
8 Procedure
8.1 Temperature for measurements
In order to reduce the effects of thermal and electric hysteresis, the temperatures of the electrodes, the
water used for washing, the standard solutions and the test solution shall be as close to each other as
possible. The temperatures of the standard solutions and the test solution shall not differ by more than
1 °C. The measurement temperature should be 25 °C ± 2 °C whenever possible.
8.2 Preparation of the test portion
Solid samples shall be homogenized without addition of water. Liquid samples shall be mixed well.
Depending on the expected chloride content, with an accuracy of 0,1 mg, 1 g to 10 g of sample shall be
weighted into a beaker (7.4). 50 ml of water (6.1) and 5 ml of nitric acid solution (6.2) shall be added then
mixed for 30 min with a magnetic stirrer (7.1).
8.3 Blank test
A blank test shall be prepared in the same manner (8.2), adding the reagents but omitting the sample.
8.4 Titration
8.4.1 Test portion (sample)
The electrode(s) (7.6) shall be immersed in the sample solution (8.2) then mixed with a magnetic stirrer
(7.1). After having verified the zero of the apparatus, the value of the starting potential shall be noted.
The titration shall be performed using an automatic pipette or manually (7.2) by adding 0,1 ml portions
of the silver nitrate standard solution (6.3), and reading the potential after each addition.
The potentiometer shall stabilize for 1 min to 2 min between each addition. If the potentiometer, at the
beginning of the titration, indicates a high chloride level (low reading), the silver nitrate standard solution
may be added in larger portions (1 ml to 2 ml). Close to the equivalence point, titration shall be performed
using 0,1 ml portions.
At the equivalence point, the difference between two successive voltage readings is the largest.
If the experiment is done by an automatic titrator, the instrument will automatically display the volume
value at the equivalence point after the end point is reached.
8.4.2 Blank test
The titration of the blank test (8.3) shall be performed in the same manner (8.4.1).
8.5 Recovery test
Before carrying out the estimations, the accuracy of the method shall be checked by adding a known
amount of sodium chloride at the expected chloride level to the sample, proceeding from (8.1).
The titration of the recovery test shall be performed in the same manner (8.4.1).
