- Abstract
IEC 61753-088-2:2013 contains the minimum initial test and measurement requirements and severities which a non-connectorized single-mode fibre optic Local Area Network Wavelength Division Multiplexing (LAN WDM) device with channel spacing of 800 GHz needs to satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the requirements of Category C - Controlled environments, as defined in Annex A of IEC 61753-1:2007. The applications of LAN WDM devices are optical MUX and DEMUX for 100GBASE-LR4 (required operating range of 2 m to 10 km) and 100GBASE-ER4 (required operating range of 2 m to 30 km) defined in IEEE P802.3ba, as shown in Annex D. The requirements cover both an integrated 1 x 4 LAN WDM device and an individual 1 x 2 LAN WDM device for cascaded module construction. Keywords: Local Area Network Wavelength Division Multiplexing (LAN WDM), 800 GHz, Category C

SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 61753-088-2:2013, identical to IEC 61753-088-2:2013. It specifies minimum initial test and measurement requirements for non-connectorized single-mode fibre optic Local Area Network Wavelength Division Multiplexing (LAN WDM) devices with 800 GHz channel spacing. The standard is for Category C - Controlled environments, so it is aimed at products that will be qualified for controlled operating conditions rather than general-purpose use.
What does SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 specify?
SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 specifies how to qualify LAN WDM devices for controlled environments and how to verify their channel performance. It covers both an integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM device and an individual 1 × 2 LAN WDM device used for cascaded module construction.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Sample size |
| Annex B | Logarithmic transfer matrix for an integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM device |
| Annex C | Logarithmic transfer matrix for an individual 1 × 2 LAN WDM device |
| Annex D | General information for applications of integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM devices |
| Annex E | General information for internal configurations of integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM devices |
The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, terms and definitions, test conditions, test report, reference components, and performance requirements. In practice, that means the standard tells a manufacturer or lab what device types are covered, what must be tested, and what evidence has to be recorded.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013?
Test conditions and sampling
SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 requires testing under the IEC 61300 series unless a clause states otherwise. Samples are expected to be new, unstressed devices, although previously used samples may also be selected, and the fibre pigtails must match the single-mode fibre categories named in the document.
This matters because qualification results depend on the test setup and the sample population. The standard also requires standard atmospheric conditions unless otherwise specified, and if the device has active temperature control, it must be set to the manufacturer’s stated set-point.
Clause 4 says the requirements apply to every input-output port combination, and the qualification has to cover the required operating channel frequency range. Annex A sets the sample size: optical performance tests use more samples than environmental and mechanical tests, so test planning has to separate the qualification campaign accordingly.
Channel and device performance
Clause 7.1 gives the channel structure for the four LAN WDM channels, including their spacing and operating frequency ranges. In practice, this anchors the device to the intended LAN WDM grid used by 100GBASE-LR4 and 100GBASE-ER4 applications.
Clause 7.2 says dimensions shall comply with the manufacturer’s drawings. That means mechanical fit and package constraints are controlled by the product drawing, so procurement and design teams need the drawing set as part of the technical file.
Clause 7.3 and Table 2 define the main performance checks: attenuation, adjacent channel isolation, non-adjacent channel isolation, return loss, directivity, polarization dependent loss (PDL), optical power handling, cold, high temperature endurance, damp heat, change of temperature, vibration, shock, optical fibre cable flexing, fibre/cable retention, and static side load. For each item, the table links the test method, the measurement conditions, and the acceptance requirement.
What the test results have to show
For the optical characteristics, the standard checks that insertion loss, channel isolation, return loss, directivity and PDL stay within the required limits over the channel frequency range. The practical implication is that the device must not only meet a static channel plan, but also hold its optical behaviour across the full relevant band and across all port states.
The environmental and mechanical tests are not separate design exercises - they are follow-up checks after stress. The device has to meet the optical limits again after temperature, humidity, vibration, shock and fibre-handling tests, which is how the standard links robustness to optical performance.
Why the annex matrices matter
Annex B and Annex C provide logarithmic transfer matrices for the integrated 1 × 4 device and the individual 1 × 2 device. These matrices show how signals are expected to pass through the device path by path, which is useful for design verification, module construction and test interpretation.
Annex D and Annex E give application and configuration information. That helps readers understand how the parts fit into 100GBASE-LR4 and 100GBASE-ER4 transmit/receive paths and how serial-type and tree-type internal arrangements are built.
What terms does SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 define?
- LAN WDM device - a wavelength-selective branching device that performs both multiplexing and demultiplexing for the four 800 GHz-spaced channels.
- integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM device - a single-mode fibre-pigtailed device with one common port and four input/output ports for the four channels.
- individual 1 × 2 LAN WDM device - a single-mode fibre-pigtailed device with one common port and two input/output ports, made in four types for the four channel positions.
- MUX - the multiplexing function that combines separate wavelength channels onto one fibre path.
- DEMUX - the demultiplexing function that separates the wavelength channels from one fibre path.
- PDL - polarization dependent loss, the variation in loss with state of polarization, which matters because it can affect link margin.
Who uses SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013?
Manufacturers of fibre optic interconnecting devices use this standard to design and qualify LAN WDM modules. Test laboratories use it to select the correct IEC 61300 methods and to report results in a form that can be compared across suppliers.
Quality managers and buyers use it when they need a controlled-environment performance standard for optical MUX and DEMUX devices in 100GBASE-LR4 and 100GBASE-ER4 applications. System integrators and module builders use it when assembling integrated 1 × 4 devices or cascaded 1 × 2 devices into optical transmission paths.
What changed in SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013 from the previous edition?
This first edition cancels and replaces IEC/PAS 61753-088-2 published in 2010.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 61753-088-2:2013?

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Part 088-2: Non-connectorized single-mode fibre optic LAN WDM
devices with channel spacing of 800 GHz for category C –
Controlled environments
1 Scope
This part of IEC 61753 contains the minimum initial test and measurement requirements and
severities which a non-connectorized single-mode fibre optic Local Area Network Wavelength
Division Multiplexing (LAN WDM) device with channel spacing of 800 GHz needs to satisfy in
order to be categorized as meeting the requirements of Category C – Controlled environments,
as defined in Annex A of IEC 61753-1:2007. The applications of LAN WDM devices are optical
MUX and DEMUX for 100GBASE-LR4 (required operating range of 2 m to 10 km) and
100GBASE-ER4 (required operating range of 2 m to 30 km) defined in IEEE P802.3ba, as
shown in Annex D. The requirements cover both an integrated 1 × 4 LAN WDM device and an
individual 1 × 2 LAN WDM device for cascaded module construction.
