This International Standard specifies a means of uniquely identifying a musical work. It standardizes and promotes
internationally the use of a standard identification code so that musical works can be uniquely distinguished from
one another within computer databases and related documentation and for the purposes of collecting societies
involved in the administration of rights to such works.
The International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) identifies musical works as intangible creations. It is not
used to identify manifestations of or objects related to a musical work. Such manifestations and objects are the
subject of separate identification systems, such as the International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) for sound
recordings, the International Standard Music Number (ISMN) for printed music, and the International Standard
Audiovisual Number (ISAN) for audiovisual works.
Guidelines for the use of ISWC are given in normative annex A.

oeuvres, utilisable par les sociétés de perception impliquées dans la gestion des droits sur ces oeuvres.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

Introduction
The International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) system was developed by the member societies of the
International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). CISAC’s purpose in creating an
ISWC for musical works is to enable more efficient administration of rights to those works on a worldwide basis.
The ISWC provides an efficient means of identifying musical works in computer databases and related
documentation and for the exchange of information between rights societies, publishers, record companies and
other interested parties on an international level.

1 Scope

2 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this International Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.

check digit
added digit which may be used to verify the accuracy of a standard number through a mathematical relationship to
the digits contained in that number

work composed of a combination of sounds, with or without accompanying text

work
distinct, abstract creation of the mind whose existence is revealed through one or more expressions (e.g. a
performance) or manifestations (e.g. an object)
3 Construction of an ISWC
3.1 Basic construction
An ISWC consists of a prefix element followed by nine digits and a check digit, as follows:
� prefix element (1 character);
� work identifier (9 digits);
� check digit (1 digit).
When an ISWC is written or printed, the letters ISWC shall precede it. For ease of reading only, hyphens and dots
may be used as separators between the elements of the identifier.

3.2 Prefix element
The first element of an ISWC shall be the letter “T”. If necessary, the International ISWC Agency may, at its
discretion, designate another alphanumeric character in place of “T” in order to expand the numbering capacity of
the ISWC system and/or to indicate the beginning of a new phase in the assignment of ISWC to musical works.
3.3 Work identifier
The second element of an ISWC shall be the work identifier. The work identifier is a 9-digit numeric code.
Work identifiers for musical works shall be in the numeric range of 000000001 – 999999999.
3.4 Check digit
The third element of an ISWC shall be the check digit. The check digit of an ISWC is calculated on a weighted
modulus 10.
The formula for calculating the check digit is shown in informative annex B.
4 Administration

The Registration Authority for this International Standard shall be the International ISWC Agency .
The ISWC shall be administered by the International ISWC Agency and by other appropriate ISWC agencies
appointed by the International Agency for that purpose.
5 Association of an ISWC with descriptive metadata
An ISWC shall be associated with descriptive data (see informative annex C) about the musical work it identifies by
means of a database repository maintained by the specific ISWC agency which registered that work.
6 Association of an ISWC with digital content
An ISWC may be associated with digital expressions and manifestations of a musical work by employing
appropriate techniques (e.g. encryption and watermarking) to facilitate tracking the use of that work.

Guidelines for the use of an ISWC
A.1 Works for which an ISWC may be allocated
A.1.1 Eligible repertoire
An ISWC may be assigned to any musical work, published or unpublished, newly created or already existing,
irrespective of its copyright status.
Modified versions, excerpts and composite musical works shall be allocated an ISWC separate from the ISWC of
the work(s) from which they are derived.
Examples of modified versions are as follows:
� changes to the content of a musical work, with the exception of minor alterations;
� new arrangements (e.g. a Bach Invention for Piano, arranged for chamber orchestra);
� translations of the literary text of a musical work.
Examples of excerpts are as follows:
� movements and other principal divisions of a musical work which might be known as something other than the
title for the entire work (e.g. “Ode to Joy”, the last movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony);
� any work that is recognized as being an excerpt from a larger work, even though the type of excerpt may be
unknown.
Examples of composite works are as follows:
� a medley consisting of existing works or excerpts of such works performed in a continuous sequence;
� a work containing samples of pre-existing works, such as a new song in which a rap lyric is sung over a rhythm
track from a previously recorded work.
A.2 Administration of the ISWC system
A.2.1 International ISWC Agency
The Registration Authority for this International Standard shall be the International ISWC Agency. The International
ISWC Agency shall appoint ISWC agencies for specific regions and/or sectors and shall allocate blocks of ISWC to
them according to their requirements.
A.2.2 Regional and sectoral ISWC agencies

There shall be ISWC agencies for the administration and allocation of the ISWC in specific regions and/or
sectors.
The main criteria taken into account by the International ISWC Agency in appointing an ISWC agency for a specific
region or sector shall be as follows:
a) the ability of the candidate agency to manage a musical repertoire for its specified area of jurisdiction;
b) the authority of the candidate agency to solve issues relating to the unique identification of musical works in its
specified area of jurisdiction;
c) the capacity of the candidate agency to exchange information with other agencies of the ISWC system for
musical works, and to apply common rules and practices of the ISWC system as defined in the ISWC
agencies’ manual.
A.3 AllocationofanISWC
A.3.1 An ISWC shall be allocated to a musical work by an ISWC agency upon request from a rights society that
is affiliated with that agency and which currently represents one of the work’s creators (e.g. composer, author or
arranger). In cases where a creator is not represented by a copyright society that is affiliated with an ISWC agency,
the creator may request an ISWC agency to allocate ISWC to works on his behalf.

arranger). In cases where a creator is not represented by a copyright society that is affiliated with an ISWC agency,
the creator may request an ISWC agency to allocate ISWC to works on his behalf.
A.3.2 In cases where more than one ISWC agency is involved, by virtue of a work being co-written or its
creator(s) being affiliated with more than one rights agency, the ISWC may be allocated by any one of the agencies
involved after first confirming that an ISWC has not yet been allocated to that work by any other ISWC agency.
A.3.3 For a creator whose works are in the public domain, a specific ISWC agency shall be designated to assign
ISWC to that creator’s works, by arrangement with the International ISWC Agency.
A.3.4 Following the allocation of an ISWC, the ISWC agency involved shall immediately register that ISWC and
its supporting data with appropriate notifications to the parties involved.
A.3.5 The same ISWC shall not be allocated to more than one musical work.
A.3.6 If more than one ISWC has inadvertently been assigned to the same musical work, each of those ISWCs
may remain in circulation for that work.

comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude aledroit de fairepartie ducomité
technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en
liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec la Commission
électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI, Partie 3.
Les projets de Normes internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis aux comités membres pour
vote. Leur publication comme Normes internationales requiert l'approbation de 75 % au moins des comités
membres votants.
L’attention est appelée sur le fait que certains des éléments delaprésente Norme internationale peuvent faire
l’objet de droits de propriété intellectuelle ou de droits analogues. L’ISO ne saurait être tenue pour responsable de
ne pas avoir identifié de tels droits de propriété et averti de leur existence.
La Norme internationale ISO 15707 a étéélaboréepar le comité technique ISO/TC 46, Information et
documentation, sous-comité SC 9, Présentation, identification et description des documents, en collaboration avec
la Confédération internationale des sociétésd’auteurs et compositeurs (CISAC).

Introduction
Le système du code international normalisé des œuvres musicales (ISWC) a été développé par les sociétés
membres de la Confédération internationale des sociétés d'auteurs et compositeurs (CISAC). Le but de la CISAC,
en créant l'ISWC des œuvres musicales, est de permettre une administration plus efficace au niveau mondial des
droits liés à ces œuvres. L'ISWC fournit un moyen efficace d'identification des œuvres dans des bases de données
informatisées, dans la documentation relative aux œuvres, et pour l'échange d'information au niveau international
entre les sociétés de droit d'auteur, les éditeurs, les maisons de disques et les autres parties intéressées.

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifieunsystème d'identification univoque des œuvres musicales. Son but est
de promouvoir l'utilisation internationale d'un code d'identification normalisé permettant de reconnaître d'une façon
univoque les œuvres musicales dans les bases de données informatisées et dans la documentation relative aux
œuvres, utilisable par les sociétés de perception impliquées dans la gestion des droits sur ces œuvres.
Le Code international normalisé des œuvres musicales (ISWC) identifie les œuvres musicales en tant que
créations intangibles. Il ne sert pas à identifier les manifestations de ces œuvres, ni les objets qui sont liés à ces
œuvres. Les manifestations et les objets sont soumis à d'autres systèmes d'identification indépendants, tels que
l'ISRC (Code international normalisé des enregistrements), l'ISMN (numéro international normalisé de la musique)
pour les partitions, et l'ISAN (Numéro international normalisé des œuvres audiovisuelles) pour les œuvres
audiovisuelles.

2 Termes et définitions
Pour les besoins de la présente Norme internationale, les termes et définitions suivants s'appliquent.

3 Structure de l'ISWC
3.1 Construction de base
Un ISWC se compose de trois éléments: un préfixe suivi de neuf chiffres puis d'un chiffre de contrôle, comme suit:
� préfixe (1 caractère);
� identifiant de l'œuvre (9 chiffres);
� chiffredecontrôle (1 chiffre).
Quand un ISWC est écrit ou imprimé,ildoit être précédé des lettres ISWC. À seule fin de faciliter la lecture, des
tirets et des points peuvent être utiliséscomme séparateurs entre ces éléments et au sein de l'identifiant de
l'œuvre.

3.2 Préfixe
Le premier élément d'un ISWC doit être la lettre «T». L'Agence internationale de l'ISWC, peut, le cas échéant,
remplacer la lettre «T» par un autre caractère alphanumérique, de manièreàélargir la capacité de numérotation du
système ISWC et/ou indiquer le début d'une nouvelle phase dans l'affectation d'un ISWC aux œuvres musicales.
3.3 Identifiant de l'œuvre
Le deuxième élément d'un ISWC doit être l'identifiant de l'œuvre. L'identifiant de l'œuvre est un code numérique
composé de 9 chiffres.
Les identifiants des œuvres musicales doivent se situer entre 000000001 et 999999999.
3.4 Chiffre de contrôle
Le troisième élément d'un ISWC doit êtrelechiffredecontrôle. Le chiffre de contrôle d'un ISWC est calculé selon
un coefficient 10 pondéré.
La méthode de calcul du chiffre de contrôle se trouve à l'annexe informative B.
4 Administration

L'autorité d'enregistrement pour la présente Norme internationale doit être l'Agence internationale de l'ISWC .
Le système ISWC doit être administré par l'Agence internationale de l'ISWC, et par d'autres agences régionales de
l'ISWC compétentes désignées à cette fin par l'Agence internationale de l'ISWC.
5 Association d'un ISWC à des métadonnées descriptives
L'ISWC doit être associé aux données descriptives (voir annexe informative C) de l'œuvre musicale qu'il identifie,
au moyen d'une base de données de dépôt administrée par la même agence ISWC que celle ayant enregistré
l'œuvre concernée.
6 Liaison d'un ISWC au contenu numérique
Un ISWC peut être liéà des expressions et des manifestations numériques d'une œuvre musicale utilisant des
techniques appropriées (par exemple l'encryptage et le tatouage en filigrane) pour faciliter le traçage de l'utilisation
de ladite œuvre.

Lignes directrices pour l’utilisation de l’ISWC
A.1 Œuvres auxquelles un ISWC peut être attribué
A.1.1 Répertoire éligible
Un ISWC peut être attribuéà toute œuvre musicale, éditéeouinédite, nouvelle ou existante, sans prise en compte
de son statut en ce qui concerne le droit d'auteur.
Un ISWC différent de l'ISWC de l'œuvre/des œuvres dont elles sont dérivées, doit être attribué aux versions
modifiées, aux extraits et aux œuvres musicales composites.
Voici quelques exemples de versions modifiées:
� modifications du contenu d'une œuvre musicale, à l'exception des modifications peu significatives;
� nouveaux arrangements (par exemple un arrangement, pour orchestre de chambre, d'une invention pour
piano de Bach);
� traductions du texte écrit d'une œuvre musicale.
Voici quelques exemples d'extraits:
� mouvements et autres divisions importantes d'une œuvre musicale qui pourraient porter un autre titre que
e
celui de l'œuvre intégrale (par exemple «Hymne à la joie», dernier mouvement de la 9 symphonie de
Beethoven);
� œuvre reconnue en tant qu'extrait d'une œuvre plus vaste, mais dont le type d'extrait n'est pas identifié.
Voici quelques exemples d'œuvres composites:
� «medley» composé d'œuvres existantes ou d'extraits de telles œuvres exécutésenséquence continue;
� œuvre contenant plusieurs échantillons d'œuvres existantes, telle qu'une nouvelle chanson dans laquelle des
paroles de rap sont chantées sur la bande rythmique d'une œuvre déjà enregistrée.
A.2 Administration du système ISWC
A.2.1 Agence internationale de l'ISWC
L'autorité d'enregistrement pour la présente Norme internationale doit être l'Agence internationale de l'ISWC.
L'Agence internationale de l'ISWC doit accréditer des agences de l'ISWC dans des régions et/ou des secteurs
spécifiques et doit leur attribuer un bloc de numéros ISWC en fonction de leurs besoins.
A.2.2 Agences régionales et sectorielles de l'ISWC

Des agences de l'ISWC doivent être désignées pour administrer et attribuer les ISWC dans des régions et/ou
secteurs spécifiques.
Pour nommer une agence de l'ISWC d'une région ou d'un secteur spécifique, l'Agence internationale de l'ISWC
doit prendre en compte les critères suivants:
a) la compétence de l'agence candidate pour gérer un répertoire musical dans sa région de juridiction;
b) l'autorité de l'agence candidate dans le règlement des problèmes relatifs à l'identification unique des œuvres
musicales dans sa région de juridiction;
c) la capacité de l'agence candidate àéchanger des informations avec d'autres agences du système ISWC sur
les œuvres musicales, et à appliquer les règles et pratiques communes du système ISWC définies dans le
manuel des agences de l'ISWC.
A.3 Attribution d'un ISWC
A.3.1 Un ISWC doit être attribuéà une œuvre musicale par une agence de l'ISWC à la demande de toute
société de droit d'auteur affiliée à ladite agence représentant au moment de l'attribution l'un des créateurs de
