SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 is the SIST edition of an ETSI European Telecommunication Standard for Transmission and Multiplexing (TM) in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks. It specifies the hierarchical bit rates, multiplexing structure and mapping schemes used in SDH transmission networks, so that equipment and interfaces can work together across vendors and operators. The standard is based on CCITT Recommendations G.707, G.708 and G.709.
What does SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 specify?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 specifies the SDH bit rates, the basic multiplexing structure, and the mapping methods used in transmission networks based on SDH. It also sets out how the document’s requirements are organized and how the SDH multiplexing diagrams are to be read.
The document is organized into a foreword, scope, normative references, definitions and abbreviations, hierarchical bit rates, basic multiplexing structure, and multiplexing method and mapping, followed by history. Clause 5 presents the basic structure in Figure 1, and Clause 6 uses Table 1 to mark items as normative or not relevant.
The standard is not an equipment specification. In practice, that means a product does not have to implement every listed function, but any function it does implement shall follow the ETS requirements.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 builds the SDH multiplexing hierarchy around G.707 bit rates, the structure in Figure 1, and the multiplexing and mapping rules taken from G.709 with stated modifications. The practical task for an engineer is to match rates, containers, pointers, and mappings exactly to the SDH hierarchy used by the network.
- Clause 4 - hierarchical bit rates: the SDH transmission network shall use the hierarchical bit rates of CCITT Recommendation G.707. This matters when planning interfaces or checking whether a line signal fits the SDH hierarchy.
- Clause 5 - basic multiplexing structure: the SDH multiplexing structure shall follow Figure 1, which is a subset of the G.709 structure. The note on bit order matters when reading diagrams and interpreting byte and bit positions.
- Clause 6 - multiplexing method and mapping: multiplexing and mapping come from G.709 together with the ETS modifications in Table 1. Table 1 shows which items are normative, so implementers know what is required for compliance when a function is used.
- AUG, AU-4, TU-3, TU-2 and TU-1 mapping: the standard covers multiplexing of AUGs into STM-N, AU-4s via AUG, TUG-3s into VC-4, TU-3s via TUG-3, TUG-2s via TUG-3, and TU-2s and TU-1s via TUG-2. This is the core SDH hierarchy that equipment must align to when building payload structure.
- Maintenance signals and timing recovery: Clause 6 includes section maintenance signals, path maintenance signals, and timing recovery. In practice, these functions are part of keeping the SDH network aligned and monitored.
- Pointer processing: the standard covers AU pointer, TU-3 pointer, and TU-1/TU-2 pointer location, value, frequency justification, New Data Flag, generation and interpretation, plus AU-4 concatenation and TU concatenation items. These rules are what let receivers find payloads correctly when timing shifts.
- Path Overhead and tributary mapping: Clause 6 includes VC-3/VC-4 POH, VC-1/VC-2 POH, mapping of tributaries into VC-4, VC-3, VC-12 and VC-11, VC-11 to VC-12 conversion, floating and locked mode conversion, and mapping of ATM cells. This is the part used when assigning real traffic signals to SDH virtual containers.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 define?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 uses the definitions from CCITT Recommendation G.708, and Clause 3 lists the abbreviations used throughout the document.
- ATM - Asynchronous Transfer Mode, a signal type that the multiplexing structure can accommodate.
- AU - Administrative Unit, a SDH payload element carried toward STM-N.
- AUG - Administrative Unit Group, the grouped form of AUs used in the higher-order multiplexing path.
- POH - Path Overhead, the overhead associated with a virtual container path.
- SDH - Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, the transmission hierarchy covered by the standard.
- STM-N - Synchronous Transport Module-N, the SDH transport signal at hierarchical level N.
- TU - Tributary Unit, a lower-order SDH payload element used in multiplexing.
- VC - Virtual Container, the container that carries mapped tributary signals in SDH.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 is used by SDH equipment vendors, network operators, and transmission engineers who need common rules for multiplexing, mapping, and pointer processing. The foreword says the ETS was produced to provide inter-vendor and inter-operator compatibility.
It is also relevant to test laboratories, system integrators, and quality or procurement teams that need to check whether an SDH product or interface follows the expected hierarchy. In practice, they use it to specify interfaces, verify mappings, and confirm that implemented functions follow the ETS when present.
What changed in SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 corresponds to ETS 300 147 Edition 1, first published in March 1992. The history also notes a later presentation update and a PDF conversion in March 1996.
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 relies on three normative CCITT Recommendations.
- CCITT Recommendation G.707 - provides the SDH hierarchical bit rates used by Clause 4.
- CCITT Recommendation G.708 - provides the definitions used in Clause 3 and the network node interface background.
- CCITT Recommendation G.709 - provides the SDH synchronous multiplexing structure and the base mapping method that Clause 6 modifies and refines.
What does the SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 document contain?
SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 contains a foreword, scope, normative references, definitions and abbreviations, hierarchical bit rates, basic multiplexing structure, and multiplexing method and mapping. It also includes Figure 1 for the multiplexing structure and Table 1, which marks parts of G.709 as normative or not relevant for this ETS.
The document gives the structure needed to relate containers, virtual containers, tributary units, administrative units, pointers and Path Overhead. That makes it useful for design work, interoperability checks, and test planning for SDH transmission networks.
Its mapping sections cover higher-order and lower-order tributary mappings, including ATM cells. The result is a practical guide to how SDH signals are arranged and carried through the hierarchy.
