General Information
Overview
EN 14580:2005 is a CEN European standard that defines a laboratory test method to determine the static elastic modulus of natural stone under uniaxial compression. The method measures longitudinal deformation at two stress levels within cyclical loading to calculate the modulus (stiffness) of stone specimens. EN 14580 is intended for consistent mechanical characterization of natural stone used in construction, conservation and material selection.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Static elastic modulus in compression determined by uniaxial loading cycles. Requires prior knowledge of compressive strength (EN 1926).
- Apparatus: calibrated compression testing machine (per EN 12390-4); high‑precision length or strain measuring devices (inductance gauges or strain gauges) with a minimum gauge length related to grain size; ventilated oven capable of (70 ± 5) °C.
- Specimen geometry and preparation:
- Cylindrical or prismatic specimens with minimum cross dimension of 50 mm.
- Height-to-diameter (or height-to-smaller-plan-dimension) ratio between 2 and 4.
- Gauge length at least ten times the largest grain diameter, minimum 50 mm.
- Faces for load application must be plane and perpendicular within tight tolerances; capping with specified mortar (CEM I 52,5 R per EN 197‑1) is allowed if needed.
- Orientation rules for anisotropic stones (bedding/foliation) - axis normally perpendicular to principal planes of anisotropy unless otherwise required.
- Conditioning: Identification tests require drying to constant mass at (70 ± 5) °C; technological tests allow application‑specific conditioning (must be reported).
- Loading and measurement: Cyclic loading between a basic stress (
2% of mean compressive strength) and an upper stress (33% of mean compressive strength) at a specified stress rate (0.5 ± 0.2 MPa/s). Deformations are recorded prior to and during the third loading cycle (points A and B). - Calculation: The static elastic modulus is the ratio of the change in stress to the corresponding change in strain between the two measured stress levels. Results are reported in MPa with at least three significant figures.
- Reporting: Detailed test report requirements (sample identification, specimen dimensions, conditioning, compressive strengths, stresses and strains, per‑specimen and mean elastic modulus, deviations from the standard).
Applications and users
- Structural and geotechnical engineers assessing stone stiffness for load-bearing designs.
- Testing laboratories and quality control facilities providing material data for specifications and compliance.
- Quarry operators and stone suppliers for product characterization and classification.
- Architects, conservators and restoration specialists evaluating existing masonry and selecting compatible replacement stone.
- Research institutions studying mechanical behavior of natural stone.
