Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures -- Part 2-51: Tests - Fibre optic connector test for transmission with applied tensile load - Singlemode and multimode

This part of IEC 61300 describes a test to quantitatively assess the capability of fibre optic connector terminated fibre assemblies to withstand static tensile loads without uncoupling of the connector, physical damage to the assembly or degradation of optical performance. This test is intended to apply to fibre assemblies using any of the following: Media type 1: reinforced jacketed cordage of any diameter, Media type 2: cable with 900  m buffer coating that may or may not be reinforced or Media type 3: connectors terminating fibre with 250  m coating.

Overview - EN 61300-2-51:2007 (IEC 61300-2-51)

EN 61300-2-51:2007 specifies a standardized test method to assess the ability of fibre optic connector-terminated assemblies to withstand static tensile loads while maintaining transmission performance. Adopted by CLC from IEC 61300-2-51:2007, the standard covers both singlemode and multimode connectors and applies to three media types: reinforced jacketed cordage (media type 1), 900 µm buffered cables (media type 2), and connectors terminating 250 µm coated fibre (media type 3).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Objective: Quantitatively evaluate resistance to static tensile loads without connector uncoupling, physical damage, or optical degradation (increased attenuation or worse return loss).
  • Test sequence: Preconditioning, initial optical measurements, incremental application of tensile loads at specified angles, recovery, and final measurements.
  • Optical measurements: Performed at singlemode wavelengths 1310 nm and 1550 nm (optional 1625 nm) and multimode wavelengths 850 nm and 1300 nm to monitor attenuation and return loss.
  • Load application: Loads are applied at a controlled rate (preferred example: 5 N/s) in increments and held for fixed times. Angles specified include 0°, 90° and 135°; small form-factor connectors use reduced loads at 90°/135° (2/3 of preferred values).
  • Test apparatus: Uses a capstan with weights (capstan diameter example: Ø7.5 cm), a pivoting test arm (20–28 cm jumper), adapter bracket adjustable to the three angles, and fixtures that allow capstan rotation about the fibre axis.
  • Duplex cordage handling: Load values are not doubled for duplex assemblies; cordage is bent in the minor-axis direction during testing.
  • Pass/fail criteria: Based on lack of uncoupling, absence of physical damage, and acceptable changes in attenuation/return loss as defined in the relevant specification.

Practical applications and users

Who uses EN 61300-2-51:

  • Cable and connector manufacturers for design validation and quality control
  • Test laboratories performing standardized mechanical/optical certification
  • Systems integrators and network operators specifying connector performance for installations
  • R&D teams evaluating connector robustness under mechanical stress

Why it matters:

  • Ensures connector assemblies remain mechanically and optically reliable under tensile stress
  • Supports product specifications, procurement requirements, and compliance testing
  • Helps prevent field failures caused by pulling forces during installation or maintenance

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
