SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999
(Main)Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part X08: Colour fastness to degumming (ISO 105-X08:1994)
- Abstract
Describes a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds, except loose fibre, to the action of soap solutions such as those used in degumming raw silk. A specimen of the textile in contact with adjacent fabrics is treated with a soap solution, then rinsed and dried. The change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabrics are assessed with the grey scales.

SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 105-X08:1997 for textile colour fastness testing. It specifies a laboratory method for checking how the colour of textiles, except loose fibre, resists soap solutions used in degumming raw silk. The same test also measures staining of adjacent fabrics, so users can judge both colour change in the specimen and transfer to nearby materials.
What does SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 specify?
SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 specifies a test method for colour fastness to degumming for textiles of all kinds, except loose fibre. It is intended for situations where a textile may be exposed to soap solutions like those used in raw silk degumming, and it shows how the material behaves under that treatment.
The document is organized into seven clauses: scope, normative references, principle, apparatus and reagents, test specimen, procedure, and test report. That structure matters in practice because it tells the user what to prepare, how to run the test, how to judge the result, and what to record.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999?
Clause 3 states the principle: a specimen is tested in contact with adjacent fabrics, treated with a soap solution, rinsed, dried, and then assessed by grey scales. In practice, this means the test checks two things at once - fading of the specimen and staining of the adjacent fabrics.
Specimen and adjacent fabrics
Clause 5 requires a composite specimen. For fabric, the test piece is sewn between two single-fibre adjacent fabrics; for yarn, the yarn is either knitted into fabric or laid in parallel lengths between the adjacent fabrics. This matters because the surrounding fabrics capture staining, making transfer easier to judge.
Clause 4.6 names the adjacent fabrics: raw silk and a fabric of the same kind as the test textile or the predominant fibre in a blend. In practice, the choice of adjacent fabric links the result to the fibre type most relevant to the product.
Reagents and equipment
Clause 4 specifies a 500 ml vessel with reflux condenser, soap meeting defined purity and composition limits, soap solution prepared with 7 g per litre of grade 3 water, anhydrous sodium carbonate, grade 3 water, and the grey scales from ISO 105-A02 and ISO 105-A03. For users, this means the method depends on controlled reagents and a standard visual rating system, so results can be compared between laboratories.
Test procedure
Clause 6 requires 10 minutes under reflux in lightly boiling soap solution at a liquor ratio of 100:1, then addition of 0.5 g/l sodium carbonate after 10 minutes and a further 110 minutes of boiling. The composite specimen is then rinsed, washed in running tap-water, squeezed, opened if needed, and dried hanging in air at no more than 60 °C. This sequence matters because time, bath ratio, rinsing, and drying all affect the final colour change and staining.
Assessment and reporting
Clause 6.4 requires assessment of the change in colour of the specimen and the staining of each adjacent fabric by comparison with the grey scales. Clause 7 requires the report to include the standard reference, identification details for the sample, the grey scale rating for colour change, and the grey scale rating for staining. That gives the result a clear audit trail and a usable numeric outcome.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 define?
- Grey scale - The visual scale used to rate change in colour and staining by comparison.
- Adjacent fabrics - The fabrics placed with the specimen to show whether colour transfers during the test.
- Composite specimen - The assembled test piece made from the specimen and the adjacent fabrics.
- Liquor ratio - The ratio of bath volume to material in the test vessel, set here at 100:1.
- Grade 3 water - The specified water quality used to prepare the soap solution.
- Raw silk - The silk fibre used as one of the single-fibre adjacent fabrics in this method.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999?
Textile laboratories use SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 to measure colour fastness after exposure to degumming-type soap solutions. Textile mills, dyehouses, and quality control teams use it when they need to compare batches, check process performance, or document product behaviour for silk-related finishing steps. Buyers and technical specifiers may use it when they need a standard test result for materials expected to withstand degumming conditions.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 is the fourth edition and it cancels and replaces ISO 105-X08:1987. The document states that this edition is a technical revision.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999?
- ISO 105-A01:1994 - Provides general principles of testing and the reference to grade 3 water.
- ISO 105-A02:1993 - Provides the grey scale for assessing change in colour.
- ISO 105-A03:1993 - Provides the grey scale for assessing staining.
- ISO 105-F:1985 - Provides standard adjacent fabrics, including the raw silk reference fabric and the related fabric types used with blends.
What does the SIST EN ISO 105-X08:1999 document contain?
The document contains the test principle, the apparatus and reagent specification, specimen preparation instructions for fabric and yarn, the reflux treatment procedure, and the visual assessment method. It also gives the reporting items needed to identify the sample and state the grey scale ratings. For users, that means the standard is a complete test method, not just a general description of colour fastness to degumming.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be re-
presented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 105-X08 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
coloran ts.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition
(ISO 105-XO8:1987), of which it constitutes a technical revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “parts ”, each designated by
a letter (e.g. “Part A ”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985.
Esch part contained a series of “sections ”, each designated by the re-
spective part letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AO1 “).
These sections are now being republished as separate documents, them-
selves designated “Parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric desig-
nations. A complete list of these Parts is given in ISO 105-AOI .
