Surfaces for sports areas - Procedure for accelerated ageing by exposure to hot air

This EN describes a procedure suitable for subjecting test pieces taken from all types of polymeric surfaces for sports areas to accelerated ageing by exposure to hot air in the laboratory. Test pieces are aged to permit a comparison of their physical characteristics before and after ageing, in accordance with EN test methods for surfaces for sports areas, to be made.

Overview

EN 13817:2004 - "Surfaces for sports areas - Procedure for accelerated ageing by exposure to hot air" (CEN) defines a laboratory method to subject test pieces taken from sports surface systems to accelerated hot‑air ageing. The procedure is intended primarily for polymeric sports surfaces (non‑wooden) and enables comparison of selected physical characteristics before and after ageing in accordance with European test methods for sports surfaces.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applicable to all types of sports area surfaces except wooden surfaces; primarily intended for polymeric materials.
  • Principle: Test pieces are exposed to elevated air temperature to assess changes in physical characteristics.
  • Apparatus: An air‑circulating oven compliant with ISO 188:1998 is specified.
  • Test conditions:
    • Oven preheated to (70 ± 2) °C.
    • Test pieces placed stationary, free from strain, freely exposed to air on all sides, and not exposed to light.
    • Exposure duration (336 ± 2) h.
  • Post‑ageing conditioning: Remove samples and condition together with an un‑aged sample for not less than 16 h and not more than 6 days in a relaxed state before testing.
  • Marking and sampling: Marking should avoid critical areas and ideally be done after ageing; test pieces should not need mechanical/chemical treatment after removal from the oven.
  • Comparison and calculation: Compare aged vs un‑aged results using the relevant EN test methods. Percentage change can be calculated (C = 100 × (A − O) / O), where A = aged value and O = un‑aged value.
  • Precautions: Avoid simultaneous ageing of different materials in the same oven to prevent migration of anti‑degradants or plasticizers. Interpret results cautiously for materials that show temporary changes due to drying.

Applications and practical value

  • Durability assessment: Provides accelerated ageing data to predict how polymeric sports surfaces (e.g., acrylic, polyurethane systems) respond to heat exposure over time.
  • Quality control: Enables manufacturers and test laboratories to compare batches and validate product stability after thermal stress.
  • Specification and procurement: Helps specifiers and facility owners assess long‑term performance and select materials that retain physical properties after thermal ageing.
  • Research and development: Useful for material R&D, formulation screening and improvement of sports surfacing systems.

Who would use this standard
