Surfaces for sports areas - Procedure for accelerated ageing by immersion in hot water
This European Standard describes a procedure for subjecting test pieces taken from surfaces for sports areas to accelerated ageing by immersion in hot water. Test pieces are aged to permit a comparison of their physical characteristics before and after ageing, in accordance with European Standard test methods for surfaces for sport areas, to be made.

Overview - EN 13744:2004 (Surfaces for sports areas)
EN 13744:2004 is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory procedure for accelerated ageing of surfaces for sports areas by immersion in hot water. The method is intended to assess changes in selected physical characteristics of test pieces taken from sports surfaces (primarily polymeric, not wooden) by comparing measurements taken before and after exposure. The procedure gives a controlled way to evaluate the effects of warm water exposure on materials used in sports flooring and non‑textile floor coverings.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to test pieces from sports surfaces (except wooden surfaces); primarily intended for polymeric surfaces.
- Principle: Expose test pieces to hot water to accelerate ageing and then compare physical characteristics before and after treatment.
- Apparatus: Requires a water bath capable of maintaining (70 ± 2) °C and small weights to assist immersion if necessary.
- Test pieces: Prepare and condition test pieces according to the relevant European Standard test methods for sports surfaces; no post‑immersion mechanical, chemical or heat treatment of pieces should be required.
- Procedure:
- Immerse test pieces fully and freely exposed on all sides in the water bath.
- Immersion duration: (336 ± 2) hours.
- After removal, condition aged and un‑aged samples together for not less than 16 hours and not more than 6 days in a relaxed condition before testing.
- Avoid simultaneous ageing of different materials in the same bath (risk of migration of anti‑degradants or plasticizers).
- Results: Calculate properties as per the relevant test method; percentage change may be expressed using the standard formula provided in the document.
- Test report: Must reference EN 13744:2004 and include identification of the surface, test method references, before/after values, and percentage changes where applicable.
Applications - practical value and users
Who uses EN 13744:
- Manufacturers of polymeric sports surfaces and non‑textile floor coverings for product development and quality control.
- Independent testing laboratories performing durability and ageing assessments.
- Specifiers, procurement teams, and facility managers validating material suitability for wet or warm environments.
- Certification bodies and regulatory authorities assessing compliance with European sports-surface requirements.
Practical uses:
- Evaluate expected changes in properties (e.g., impact absorption) after prolonged exposure to warm water.
- Compare product formulations or constructions for resistance to water‑related ageing.
- Support durability claims and lifecycle assessments for sports flooring installations.
Related standards
- EN 13817 - Procedures for accelerated ageing by exposure to hot air (paired method in the ageing series).
- Relevant European Standard test methods for surfaces for sports areas (for measuring physical characteristics such as impact absorption).
