Ventilation for buildings - Chilled ceilings - Testing and rating

This European Standard specifies test conditions and methods for the determination of the cooling capacity of chilled ceilings and other extended chilled surfaces.
The purpose of the Standard is to give comparable and repeatable product data.
The test method applies to all types of surface cooling systems using any medium as energy transport medium.
NOTE   The result is valid only for the specified test set up. For other conditions (i.e. different positions of heat loads, forced flow around the test object, variations in surface area) the producer should give guidance based on full-scale tests.
This standard refers to water as the cooling medium throughout, however wherever water is specified any other cooling medium can also be used in the test. Where air is the transport medium this air may not be discharged into the test room. In addition, this standard refers to chilled surfaces and where "surfaces" are specified this should be taken to include ceiling, wall or floor as appropriate.

EN 14240:2004, published by CEN, defines test conditions and laboratory methods for the determination and rating of the cooling capacity of chilled ceilings and other extended chilled surfaces. Its primary purpose is to provide comparable and repeatable product data for surface cooling systems. The standard is written with water as the reference cooling medium but allows other media to be used; when air is the transport medium, that air must not be discharged into the test room. Results apply to the specified test setup only - producers should provide guidance or full‑scale test data for other installation conditions.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to all types of surface cooling systems (ceilings, walls, floors) and any energy transport medium.
  • Test conditions and methods
    • Defines laboratory test setups and measurement methods used to determine cooling capacity and produce rating data.
  • Repeatability and comparability
    • Emphasis on standardized conditions so manufacturers and test labs produce consistent product data.
  • Cooling medium guidance
    • Uses water as the reference medium; other media permitted where appropriate.
  • Limitations and test validity
    • Explicit note that results are valid only for the specified test configuration (heat load positioning, surface area, surrounding flow conditions).
  • Definitions
    • Clarifies terminology for “chilled surfaces,” including ceiling, wall, and floor applications.

Applications

EN 14240:2004 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers of chilled ceilings and radiant surface cooling systems - to rate products and publish comparable cooling capacity data.
  • Independent test laboratories - to perform standardized laboratory testing and certification.
  • HVAC consultants and design engineers - to interpret laboratory ratings when specifying systems for building projects.
  • Specifiers and procurement teams - to compare product performance across suppliers using common test data.
  • Facility managers and commissioning agents - to validate manufacturer data against expected in‑building performance and to request full‑scale tests or guidance for site‑specific conditions.

Related Standards

  • Consult other CEN or ISO standards covering ventilation, indoor environmental performance, and HVAC testing methods for complementary requirements and in‑situ testing protocols.
  • For project-specific design, combine EN 14240 product ratings with building‑scale thermal and airflow standards or guidelines.
