Overview

prEN IEC 62841-4-10:2023/prAA:2023 is a draft CENELEC amendment that defines particular safety requirements for pole-mounted pruners (electric motor‑operated, transportable and lawn & garden machinery). It is an amendment to Part 4‑10 of the EN IEC 62841 series and is intended to be used together with EN 62841-1:2015 (General requirements). This draft (prAA) updates normative annexes, adds normative references and clarifies the relationship with EU legislation (Directive 2006/42/EC). Note: as a draft amendment it is distributed for enquiry and subject to change.

Key Topics

  • Scope and application: Supplements/modifies EN 62841-1:2015 for pole‑mounted pruners; where Part 4‑10 is silent, Part 1 applies.
  • Annex modifications:
    • Annex I retitled and clarified for measurement of noise and vibration emissions (normative).
    • Annex K (battery tools and battery packs) amended: pole‑mounted pruners shall not be equipped with an integral battery; compliance is checked by inspection.
  • Normative references (Annex ZA): Adds and aligns international standards relevant to insulation, acoustics and vibration testing (see Related Standards).
  • Regulatory alignment (Annex ZZ): Maps clauses of the standard to the essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive) to provide a presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal of the EU.
  • Standards workstream: Prepared by CLC/TC 116 (“Safety and environmental aspects of motor‑operated electric tools”) and intended to become EN IEC 62841-4-10:202x/A11:202x if approved.

Applications

Who uses this standard and why:

  • Manufacturers of pole‑mounted pruners: design, safety verification, and documentation to meet EU market expectations.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors: carry out noise/vibration and electrical inspections, verify absence of integral batteries and other safety features.
  • Product safety and compliance engineers: apply requirements to ensure alignment with EN 62841‑1 and the Machinery Directive for CE marking.
  • Technical authors and training providers: prepare instructions, warning labels and user information in line with the standard’s marking and instructions clauses.

Benefits:

  • Clear guidance for safe design and testing of pole‑mounted pruners.
  • Supports conformity assessment and market access within the EU.

Related Standards

Key referenced documents included via Annex ZA:

  • EN 62841-1:2015 (General requirements)
  • IEC 60664-3 / EN 60664-3 (Insulation coordination - coating/potting)
  • IEC 60664-4 / EN 60664-4 (High‑frequency voltage stress)
  • ISO 354, ISO 3744, ISO 11201 (Acoustics / noise measurement)
  • ISO 22867, ISO 22868 (Vibration and noise test codes for forestry/gardening machinery)
