Overview

SIST ETS 300 504 E4:2003 is a European standard that specifies the typical attributes of different types of Mobile Stations (MS) designed for use in GSM Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMN). GSM PLMNs include traditional GSM networks, DCS1800, and networks based on GSM specifications regardless of frequency band. The standard offers guidance for manufacturers, network operators, and customers, allowing them to select the optimal combination of mobile station characteristics to suit diverse service needs in digital cellular telecommunications systems.

Key Topics

Types of Mobile Stations

  • Hand-held Mobile Stations (MS): Portable devices where the antenna is directly attached to the device containing the acoustic transducers, mainly used for speech services.
  • Vehicular Mounted MS: Devices with an externally mounted antenna, suitable for installation in vehicles such as trucks, buses, trains, or ships.
  • Multi-band MS: Mobile stations capable of operating in more than one frequency band (e.g., GSM and DCS1800), providing handover and cell reselection within those bands.

Mobile Station Attributes

  • Service Access Configuration: The combination of tele-, bearer, and supplementary services available, depending on the user's requirements and the manufacturer's design.
  • Access Capability: Defined by supported frequency bands, channel structures, and simultaneous provision of services. These capabilities align with standards for channel structures and access defined in GSM 04.03.
  • Speech Codecs: Support for various speech coding schemes, such as Full Rate, Enhanced Full Rate, and Half Rate codecs, enabling flexibility in voice service quality and capacity.

Output and Power Control

  • Power Classes: Classification according to the maximum output power for GSM and DCS1800 bands, with stipulated power classes for different mobile station types. Power control can be commanded by the network to optimize performance and reduce interference.

Applications

Network Design and Deployment

  • Operator Guidance: Helps network operators specify mobile station requirements based on intended application environments, such as urban handheld use versus vehicular installations.
  • Multi-band Deployment: Facilitates seamless service across different frequency bands, improving coverage and roaming capabilities in pan-European and international networks.

Product Development

  • Manufacturer Reference: Acts as a reference for device manufacturers to design compliant handsets and vehicular units, supporting various GSM services and operational bands.
  • Service Flexibility: Enables the integration and support of telecommunication services utilizing GSM or DCS1800 technologies, enhancing service offering versatility.

User and Business Value

  • Choice and Customization: Both business customers and individual users benefit from the ability to select the most appropriate mobile station configuration, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with GSM PLMN requirements.

Related Standards

For comprehensive implementation and type approval, the following related GSM standards should be consulted:

  • GSM 01.04 (ETR 100): Abbreviations and acronyms for GSM systems.
  • GSM 04.03 (ETS 300 552): Defines channel structures and access capabilities between mobile stations and base stations.
  • GSM 04.08 (ETS 300 557): Specifications for the mobile radio interface layer.
  • GSM 05.05 (ETS 300 577): Standards for radio transmission and reception, including power output specifications.
  • GSM 11.10 (ETS 300 607): Procedures for mobile station type approval and conformity assessment.

SIST ETS 300 504 E4:2003 serves as a fundamental reference in the GSM ecosystem, assisting industry stakeholders in achieving interoperability, device compliance, and reliable service in global mobile communications.
