SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 is the Slovenian draft amendment to EN 13445-2 from SIST and CEN. It covers the materials part of unfired pressure vessels and specifies how steel products, selected non-pressure parts, and brittle-fracture-sensitive materials are handled in pressure-vessel design and fabrication. Designers, fabricators, material suppliers, and inspectors use it to choose acceptable materials and determine the related design values.

What does SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 specify?

SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 specifies requirements for steel products used for unfired pressure vessels. It also points to separate parts for other metallic materials such as spheroidal graphite cast iron, aluminium, nickel, copper, and titanium, and it gives specific rules for metallic materials that are not covered by a harmonized material standard.

The amendment is organized as targeted changes to the existing part:

SectionWhat it covers
Clause 2Updated normative references
Clause 5Materials for non-pressure parts
B.2.2Method 1 for material selection and brittle fracture prevention
B.2.3Method 2 for impact testing and temperature selection

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026?

Clause 5 and Annex B are the main technical focus of this amendment. They set how to select materials, how to derive design-relevant strength values, and how to check brittle fracture behaviour for different product forms.

Materials for non-pressure parts

Clause 5 says that non-pressure parts welded to a vessel, such as supporting lugs, skirts, baffles and similar parts, shall use materials with specifications that cover at least chemical composition and tensile properties. Those parts shall also not restrict the operating conditions of the material they are attached to. In practice, a support or attachment must not become the limiting item for temperature or service conditions.

Strength values for ferritic and structural steels

Clause 5.2 gives the basis for yield strength and tensile strength of steels other than austenitic steels used for non-pressure parts. Where a steel has specified minimum 0,2 % proof strength at elevated temperatures, that property is used above 20 °C according to the procedure in 4.2.2. For structural steels without elevated-temperature properties, the room-temperature yield strength may be used up to 50 °C, then reduced using the factors in Table 5-1 with linear interpolation.

This matters because the designer has to convert material certificate data into usable design values at the actual service temperature. Clause 5.2.3 then links those material properties to the maximum nominal design stress for normal operating, exceptional, and test load cases, together with the safety factors in EN 13445-3:2021, Clause 6.

Strength values for austenitic steels

Clause 5.3 covers austenitic steels used for non-pressure parts. Where elevated-temperature 0,2 % proof strength is specified, the same procedure as in 4.2.2 applies. Where it is not specified, tensile strength above 20 °C is calculated using the formula in 5.3.2 and the reduction factors in Table 5-3.

For the user, this means austenitic materials are not handled by the same temperature reduction logic as ferritic steels. The document gives a separate calculation route so the allowable stress can be set consistently for these materials.

Method 1 for brittle fracture prevention

Annex B.2.2 updates Method 1 with revised guide tables for material selection. The tables group plates, strips, tubes, bars, forgings, fittings, castings, fasteners, bolts, nuts, and austenitic grades by steel group and reference thickness. They also show temperature limits and notes tied to the relevant product standards.

In practice, Method 1 is the table-based route for checking whether a chosen product form and grade can be used for the intended service temperature and thickness.

Method 2 for impact testing at low temperature

Annex B.2.3 adds a rule for applications below the dotted line in Figures B.2-2 and B.2-4. For those cases, steels shall be impact tested at -40 °C or at a lower temperature. The figures also show how the material impact test temperature T_KV relates to the design reference temperature T_R and the reference thickness e_B.

This is the practical low-temperature route: the closer the service condition is to the lower-temperature zone, the stricter the impact test temperature becomes.

Product-form grouping and special restrictions

Annex E.2 replaces the main grouping table for European standardised steels by product form. The updated table covers plate and strip, bars, seamless tube, welded tube, forgings, castings, fittings, and fasteners, and it keeps the notes that control use limits.

The table also reflects several practical restrictions. TMCP steels shall not be hot formed, certain fasteners shall not be welded, and ferritic stainless steels are limited to -10 °C and above. For bolting, the amendment identifies specific material grades that can be used when bolt design is calculated according to EN 13445-3:2021, provided the stated material requirements are met.

What terms does SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 define?

  • AW - The as-welded condition, used in Method 2 figures for deciding impact test temperature.
  • PWHT - Post weld heat treatment, a heat-treatment step that the document links to minimum temperatures and fabrication rules.
  • TMCP - Thermomechanically treated steels, which the document treats differently from conventionally processed steels.
  • T_R - Design reference temperature, the temperature basis used in Annex B.2.3 for brittle fracture assessment.
  • T_KV - Material impact test temperature, the temperature at which impact testing is set in Method 2.
  • e_B - Reference thickness, the thickness parameter used together with temperature in the brittle-fracture tables and figures.
  • KV - The impact energy criterion used in the Method 2 figures for low-temperature assessment.
  • 0,2 % proof strength - The stress level used as the yield-property basis for several steel classes at elevated temperature.

Who uses SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026?

This part of EN 13445 is used by people who specify, buy, make, check, or approve materials for unfired pressure vessels. Typical users include:

  • pressure vessel designers and calculation engineers
  • material engineers and metallurgists
  • buyers and procurement staff ordering plates, strips, tubes, forgings, castings, fittings, bolts, and nuts
  • fabricators who need to know welding, hot-forming, and heat-treatment limits
  • inspection and quality teams checking certificates, impact tests, and product-form compliance

In practice, they use it to decide whether a material grade is acceptable, what test temperature is needed, and what strength value may be used in design.

What changed in SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 modifies EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023. The amendment states these changes:

  • Clause 2 updates the normative references to the current editions of EN 13445-4 and EN 13445-5.
  • Clause 2 adds references for stainless steel products, steel castings, and butt-welding pipe fittings.
  • Clause 5 is replaced with new text for non-pressure parts and temperature-dependent strength values.
  • Annex B.2.2 updates the Method 1 tables for brittle fracture prevention and material selection.
  • Annex B.2.3 updates Method 2 and adds the low-temperature impact-testing rule.
  • Annex E.2 replaces the grouping table for European standardised steels by product form.
  • Annex ZA is rewritten to reflect the current directive relationship wording.
  • The bibliography is updated with new and revised supporting references.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026?

  • EN 13445-3:2021 - supplies the safety factors and design-stress framework used in Clause 5.
  • EN 13445-4:2021+A1:2023 - provides fabrication rules, including heat treatment and hot-forming constraints.
  • EN 13445-5:2021+A1:2024 - provides inspection and testing requirements used alongside the materials rules.
  • EN 10088-2:2024, EN 10088-3:2023, EN 10088-4:2009, EN 10088-5:2009 - provide technical delivery conditions for stainless steels used in Clause 5.
  • EN 10213:2007+A1:2016 - provides requirements for steel castings for pressure purposes and related heat-treatment guidance.
  • EN 10253-2:2021 - provides requirements for non-alloy and ferritic alloy butt-welding fittings with specific inspection requirements.
  • EN 10222-5:2017 - appears in the bibliography as a supporting standard for stainless steel forgings for pressure purposes.
  • EN 10253-4:2008 - appears in the bibliography as a supporting standard for austenitic and austenitic-ferritic butt-welding fittings.

What does the SIST EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/oprA2:2026 document contain?

The document contains replacement tables, formulas, figures, and reference lists rather than a full rewritten standard. Its technical content includes the reduction factors in Tables 5-1 and 5-3, the list of steels in Table 5-2, and the Method 1 and Method 2 brittle-fracture selection material in Annex B.

It also contains the enlarged product-form grouping table in Annex E.2, which is the main lookup tool for matching a material grade to a product form and use note.

Annex ZA gives the relationship to Directive 2014/68/EU, so the document can be used in the pressure-equipment conformity context. The bibliography then points to the product standards that support the material tables and special cases.
