SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 is a SIST standard identical to EN 300 417-1-2 Version 1.1.2, published by ETSI for the Transmission and Multiplexing (TM) family. It gives general information on the Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) proforma used to describe SDH equipment capabilities for conformance and approval testing.
What does SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 specify?
SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 specifies the structure, contents, and completion guidance for the ICS proforma used with EN 300 417-1-1. The ICS proforma is a normative part of the reference specification, so it is the document used to record which options and capabilities an implementation supports.
The standard is organized into five clauses and two informative annexes. Clause 1 explains the purpose and use of the ICS proforma, clause 2 lists references, clause 3 defines the main terms and abbreviations, clause 4 describes the proforma structure and contents, and clause 5 explains how the ICS relates to the Detailed System Description (DSD).
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Note cross-reference table for adding explanations to ICS items |
| Annex B | Client test preparation information for conformance / approval testing, including a System Conformance Statement (SCS) and client checklist |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003?
SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 requires the supplier to complete the ICS proforma when claiming conformance to EN 300 417-1-1 and to identify both the implementation and the supplier. In practice, this is the base document the test laboratory uses to understand exactly what is being tested.
Clause 4 states that the ICS proforma consists of pre-printed tables structured according to ISO/IEC 9646-7. That matters because the answers are given in a standard form, which makes comparisons and test selection consistent.
Clause 4 also says the proforma has a main part, Annex A with guidance and status information for ICS items, and further annexes that identify the IUT and provide the ICS tables for one layer. In practice, each layer instance needs to be linked to the right set of answers.
Clause 5 requires a Detailed System Description (DSD) to accompany the completed ICS proforma. The DSD must identify sets of homogeneous layer instances and the references for the instances in each set, so the laboratory can relate the written conformance statements to the actual System Under Test (SUT).
The document explains that the ICS proforma is used for static conformance review, test case deselection, test suite parameterization, analysis of results, and inclusion in the final test report. In practical terms, the ICS helps decide which tests apply and keeps the test record traceable.
Annex B provides client-facing forms for conformance / approval testing of an SDH network element. It records the client organization, test candidate, test status, testing claims, and a client checklist, which helps the laboratory collect the information needed before testing starts.
What terms does SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 define?
- Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) - A statement of the capabilities and options implemented for a supported specification, used to test only the relevant requirements.
- Detailed System Description (DSD) - An overview of which layer instances make up the SUT and how they are combined.
- System Under Test (SUT) - The implementation being assessed in conformance or approval testing.
- Implementation Under Test (IUT) - The implementation described for static conformance review and related test selection.
- System Conformance Statement (SCS) - A statement used in Annex B to identify the client organization and the test candidate.
- Layer instance - The real hardware, software, and firmware realization of a layer in transmission equipment.
- Homogeneous layer instances - A set of layer instances supporting the same features, treated as one IUT for conformance verdicts.
Who uses SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003?
SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 is used by suppliers of SDH network elements, test laboratories, and clients who request conformance / approval testing. It is also used by engineers and quality staff who need a standard way to state which transport functionality options are implemented.
In practice, suppliers use it to prepare ICS proformas for SDH layers, laboratories use it to select and parameterize tests, and clients use Annex B forms to identify the test candidate and test-related information.
What changed in SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 from the previous edition?
The document history records an original edition from October 1996 and a later publication in November 1998 as EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2. The foreword states that the family was converted to EN 300 417 without technical changes, with editorial changes such as reference updates.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003?
- ETS 300 406 - Provides the testing and specification methodology used for conformance testing.
- EN 300 417-1-1 - The base specification whose transport functionality is described by this ICS proforma.
- ISO/IEC 9646-5 - Gives requirements for test laboratories and clients in the conformance assessment process.
- ISO/IEC 9646-7 - Defines the ICS structure and contents used by this document.
- EG 201 058 - Gives the style guide used for writing and completing the ICS tables.
The foreword places this part in a larger EN 300 417 family, with matching ICS proforma and Abstract Test Suite (ATS) parts for the different SDH, PDH, synchronization, and auxiliary layer functions.
What does the SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003 document contain?
The document contains the ICS proforma framework, the clauses that explain how to use it, and the definitions needed to complete it consistently. It also contains Annex A, which supports cross-referencing and note-taking for ICS items.
Annex B contains the practical forms used before conformance / approval testing, including fields for client organization, test candidate identification, testing claims, and a client checklist. These forms support laboratory preparation, traceability, and reporting.
The document also shows how the ICS proforma links to the DSD through the identification of the IUT, so the answers can be tied to specific homogeneous layer instances in the SUT.

Such a statement is called an Implementation ConformanceStatement (ICS).A client of a test laboratory who requests a conformance / approval test should provide the test laboratory with acompleted ICS proforma for each layer to be tested and a detailed system description of the implementation. The ICS proforma is not another complete description of the related specification, but rather a compact form of its staticconformance requirements, to be used by the test laboratory to identify which test should be performed on a givenimplementation. Not every feature of a profile specification is contained in the related ICS proforma. For particularcases requiring specific information, the ICS can refer to the appropriate clause of the related specification by means ofreferences, notes and or comments. The ICS proforma captures the implementation flexibility allowed by the related specification and details which optionsare left to the implementor, and which are conditionally dependent on other options taken by the implementor.SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003
ETSIEN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2 (1998-11)61ScopeThe present document provides general information about the Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) proformastructure and contents, as well as guidance for filling-in the document. The ICS proforma for a Synchronous DigitalHierarchy (SDH) Network Element (NE) are defined in compliance with the relevant requirements, and in accordancewith the relevant guidance, given in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [4], in ETS 300 406 [1] and in EG 201 058 (see bibliography). The ICS proforma is a normative part of the reference specification. The supplier of an implementation which is claimed to conform to EN 300 417-1-1 [2] is required to complete a copy ofthese ICS proforma, namely the present document, and is further required to provide all information necessary toidentify both the implementation (e.g. specify it by means of a detailed system description) and the supplier. The client of the test laboratory might be identified by means of the System Conformance Statement (SCS) and a clientchecklist. Those proforma are included in annex B of the present document. The use of SCS proforma and clientchecklist is not mandatory, any suitable means of providing such information is acceptable.According to ETS 300 406 [1] the ICS proforma has two main objectives:-within the context of conformance testing, to be the reference document for the conformance assessment processrelated to the Implementation Under Test (IUT);-outside the context of conformance testing, to provide an overview of the implementation.Concerning the conformance assessment process, the ICS proforma is used:-as the description of the IUT for the static conformance review;-as an element of description of the IUT capabilities for the test case deselection;-as an element of description of the IUT for the test suite parameterization;-as a reference document for the analysis of the results;-for inclusion with the final test report.Outside the conformance testing context, the ICS proforma is or may be used:-to provide an overview of the capability supported by the implementation (see note);-to statically check the interworking capacities of two implementations;-as a standard checklist of the base specification conformance requirements. When requesting conformance / approval testing of an SDH layer implementation, the supplier should always fill all theICS proforma relevant for that layer. In the case where more than one instance of the same layer appears in the detailedsystem description, the client of a test laboratory should clearly identify any differences existing between these instances(if any).NOTE:Each capability of the ICS associated implementation is described as a conformance statement which isthe result of the answer, by the supplier, to the dedicated ICS item.SIST EN 300 417-1-2 V1.1.2:2003
