Overview

kSIST FprEN IEC 62841-3-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 specifies the safety requirements for transportable table masonry saws that are powered by electric motors. Developed by SIST and CENELEC, this European standard is part of the broader EN IEC 62841 series, which addresses the safety of electric motor-operated tools, including portable tools and lawn and garden machinery. This particular standard amendment focuses on hazards unique to table masonry saws and addresses requirements for conformity with EU machinery safety regulations.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements: Defines particular safety measures and supplementary requirements for transportable table masonry saws, detailing cord types, supply connections, and external flexible cables to enhance operational safety.
  • Noise and Vibration Emissions: Outlines procedures for measuring and limiting noise and vibration to protect users, in accordance with current European and international standards.
  • Normative References: Lists references to other international and European standards relevant to masonry saws and general tool safety, ensuring harmonization and clarity in compliance.
  • EU Regulatory Compliance: Addresses the relationship between the standard and EU Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, providing presumption of conformity where the standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Applications

The standard is essential for manufacturers, importers, and distributors of transportable table masonry saws intended for professional, industrial, or DIY use. Its practical value includes:

  • Product Design and Manufacturing: Ensures that tools are built to rigorous safety specifications, minimizing hazards such as electrical risks, mechanical failures, excessive noise, and dangerous vibration.
  • Market Access: Facilitates CE marking and legal placement of products within the European Economic Area by aligning with EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 and related directives.
  • User Safety: Enhances operator safety by requiring compliant supply cords, effective control devices, stability measures, and adequate risk controls against moving parts and temperatures.
  • Documentation and Instructions: Sets out expectations for comprehensive and user-friendly technical documentation, which is crucial for both compliance and user safety.
  • Risk Assessment: Aligns with EN ISO 12100 for risk assessment methodology, helping organizations carry out thorough hazard identification and mitigation strategies within their design and operational processes.

Related Standards

This amendment references and harmonizes with several primary standards, including:

  • EN IEC 62841-1: General requirements for electric motor-operated tools, forming the foundation of the safety principles applied within Part 3-17.
  • EN 1339: Concrete paving flags - requirements and test methods, pertinent for defining materials processed by masonry saws.
  • IEC 60335-2-41 / EN IEC 60335-2-41: Safety for household and similar electrical appliances, offering further context on electrical safety.
  • EN ISO 12100: General principles for risk assessment, which underpins the risk-related clauses of this standard.

Conclusion

By implementing the requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 62841-3-17:2026/kFprAA:2026, organizations can ensure that their transportable table masonry saws meet the highest safety standards, facilitate market acceptance within the EU, and demonstrate due diligence in risk management and compliance. This standard is a key resource for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, and supply of electric masonry saws, or seeking to maintain conformity with evolving European machinery safety regulations.
