Abstract

This standard covers two cable types, Type A and Type B.
Type A, jacketed fibre, is intended for printed circuit board inter-connection applications inside equipment.
Type B, single core, is intended for general airframe and equipment inter-connection cable suitable for installation in all aircraft locations, with exception of power plant compartments.
These cables are particularly suitable for use in military aircraft as well as for general civil aircraft applications.

SIST EN 4532:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 4532:2009 for aerospace optical cables with a single core 200 µm/280 µm fibre and a 2,5 mm outer jacket. It specifies two cable types, their construction, performance, test methods, marking, and packaging for aircraft interconnection use.

What does SIST EN 4532:2009 specify?

SIST EN 4532:2009 covers two cable types: Type A and Type B. Type A is a jacketed fibre for printed circuit board inter-connection inside equipment, while Type B is a single-core cable for general airframe and equipment inter-connection, suitable for all aircraft locations except power plant compartments.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, description, cable characteristics, fibre characteristics, environmental conditions, production acceptance tests, additional test information, and marking and packaging requirements. That structure matters in practice because it shows where to find design details, test methods, and delivery requirements.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4532:2009?

SIST EN 4532:2009 sets requirements for both the fibre construction and the completed cable, then verifies them with routine, quality, and qualification tests. The most important points are below.

  • Clause 4 - cable construction: Both types use a single, step-index, multimode, all silica fibre with primary coating; Type A is tight-buffer, all dielectric fibre, while Type B adds strength members and an outer sheath. In practice, this fixes the basic build that suppliers must reproduce.
  • Clause 5 - cable performance: Type B has limits for ambient light pick-up, useful installed life, MTBF, sheath colour, and bend radius. This tells installers what can be routed safely and what has to stay within bend limits over the aircraft life.
  • Clause 6 - fibre characteristics: The primary fibre uses pure silica core material with doped silica cladding, defined optical properties, UV absorption control, and coating geometry intended to support splicing and connector mounting. This is the part buyers and manufacturers use to check whether the fibre suits aircraft optical assemblies.
  • Clause 7 - environmental conditions: The standard defines operating temperature, operating pressure, humidity, storage humidity, and nuclear radiation performance. In practice, these are the service conditions the cable has to survive in aircraft use.
  • Clause 8 - tests and batch control: It separates production acceptance tests, production verification tests, and qualification approval tests, and it defines batch of fibre and batch of cable. After qualification, a Declaration of Design and Performance (DDP) is submitted to the approving authority.
  • Clause 9 - test method control: The document requires controlled launch conditions for attenuation measurements, including full launch conditions and a defined test arrangement for low- and high-temperature tests. This matters because repeatable optical measurements depend on how light is injected into the fibre.
  • Clause 10 - marking and packaging: The cable must be permanently identified on the sheath and supplied on reels with sealed ends, labels, ordering information, and storage provisions. This supports traceability, handling, and receiving inspection.

What terms does SIST EN 4532:2009 define?

  • Batch of fibre - a continuous pull from a single identifiable preform.
  • Batch of cable - all cable from one continuous extrusion and stranding operation on fibre from a single batch.
  • Full launch conditions - a controlled optical launch that excites all modes for specified attenuation tests.
  • MTBF - mean time between failure, used here to describe cable reliability over time.
  • DDP - Declaration of Design and Performance, submitted after successful qualification.
  • OTDR - an optical time-domain reflectometer printout referenced for packaged cable lengths of 500 m or greater.
  • NA - numerical aperture, used to describe the fibre launch beam and fibre acceptance.

Who uses SIST EN 4532:2009?

SIST EN 4532:2009 is used by aerospace cable manufacturers, fibre suppliers, connector and assembly suppliers, test laboratories, and aircraft integrators. It is relevant to military aircraft programs and civil aircraft programs that need optical interconnection cables for equipment and airframe wiring routes. Quality teams and buyers use it to specify construction, verify test evidence, and check marking and packaging at delivery.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 4532:2009?

The document relies on these cited standards and what they contribute:

  • EN 2591-306 - mould growth test.
  • EN 2591-316 - ozone resistance test.
  • EN 3733-001 - connector specification for matching cable buffer requirements.
  • EN 3745-100 - general test-method rules for optical fibres and cables.
  • ISO 1817 - liquid effects on rubber, used for fluid resistance tests.
  • ISO 2574 - identification marking for aircraft electrical cables.
  • IEC 60793-1-1 - general optical-fibre measurement guidance.
  • IEC 60794-1-2 - generic optical-cable test procedures and launch guidance.
  • IEC 60874-1 - optical-fibre connector reference for ambient light coupling testing.
  • MIL-HDBK-454B - guidance on materials treated as inert in mould-growth testing.

What does the SIST EN 4532:2009 document contain?

SIST EN 4532:2009 contains construction drawings for Type A and Type B, plus tables for fibre dimensions, cable dimensions, environmental conditions, acceptance tests, verification tests, and qualification tests. It also includes the test arrangements and launch-condition guidance needed for optical attenuation measurements.

The document uses figures for the fibre and cable cross-sections and for the low/high-temperature test arrangement. Clause 8 and Clause 9 include procedures, conditions, and measurement set-ups for mechanical, thermal, humidity, fluid, flammability, smoke, toxicity, radiation, light-coupling, mould-growth, and ozone testing. Clause 10 provides the designation format, cable marking rules, packaging labels, delivery length rules, and storage reel requirements.
