Overview

EN IEC 60691:2023/A1:2024 is the CENELEC-approved amendment to IEC 60691 that updates the international guidance and requirements for thermal-links (thermal fuses/thermal-links used in overcurrent and temperature protection). This amendment clarifies test current requirements, refines requirements for polymeric insulating materials and glow-wire testing, and provides enhanced test-fixture and endurance guidance for manufacturers and test laboratories.

Key benefits:

  • Improves safety and repeatability of thermal-link testing
  • Clarifies material and ignition-resistance expectations for housings
  • Aligns test methods for a range of load types including resistive, inductive and motor locked-rotor conditions

Key Topics

  • Updated test currents (Table 5): The amendment replaces the existing Table 5 with new test-current guidance covering resistive, DC, inductive, motor locked-rotor (LRA), pilot duty and electric discharge lamp conditions. Examples include AC resistive tests at 1.5× rated current and specific multipliers for motor locked-rotor and lamp inrush conditions.

  • Insulating materials and GWIT: Polymeric housings for thermal-link assemblies must meet specified ratings or be tested to the relevant standards. The glow-wire ignition test (GWIT) requirement has been updated to 750 °C (IEC 60695-2-13). Epoxy or potting compounds in direct contact with live parts are exempt from some items except those explicitly retained.

  • Test-fixture and endurance procedures: The amendment includes practical test-fixture instructions such as placing three specimens in series in a stabilized static-air oven, energizing with the resistive rated current for 24 h or as declared by the manufacturer, whichever is higher, and guidance for thermal monitoring using a huge mass metal block.

  • Fixturing details: A recommended size for the huge mass metal block is no less than 250 mm × 110 mm × 60 mm, with a thermocouple arranged at its center. The selected wire size for tests should follow the smallest cross-sectional area specified in Table 2 of IEC 60730-1:2022.

Applications

This amendment is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of thermal-links and miniature fuses
  • Design engineers developing overcurrent and thermal protection
  • Test laboratories performing type and routine testing
  • Compliance and certification bodies in electrotechnical safety

Practical applications include improving component selection, updating test plans, and ensuring housings and assemblies meet the updated ignition-resistance and endurance expectations.
