Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-48: Particular requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters

Deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial grillers and toasters not intended for household use. The rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other appliances. Rotary or continuous grillers and toasters and similar appliances intended for grilling by radiant heat such as rotisseries, salamanders, etc. are with the scope of this standard. Appliances within the scope of this standard are typically used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals and commercial enterprises such as bakeries, butcheries, etc. The electrical part of appliances making use of other forms of energy is also within the scope of this standard.

Overview

EN 60335-2-48:2003/A11:2012 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard for commercial electric grillers and toasters. It supplements EN 60335-2-48:2003 and EN 60335-1:2012 to define particular safety, marking and testing requirements for appliances intended for commercial and collective use (restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries, etc.). The amendment includes specific provisions for appliances with power-driven moving parts (Annex ZE) and supports conformity with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) and Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and exclusions: applies to commercial electric grillers and toasters; excludes machines exclusively for industrial purposes, induction-heated grillers, continuous mass‑production food machines and griddles covered by IEC 60335-2-38.
  • Annex ZE (commercial machines with moving parts): additional requirements to meet Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) of 2006/42/EC for appliances used by trained users or declared for commercial use.
  • Operational test conditions: tests are carried out with appliances unloaded, controls set to maximum, timers disabled; motors are operated under the most severe expected normal-use conditions.
  • Marking & instructions: mandatory front-cover caution (“CAUTION: Read the instructions before using the machine” or equivalent symbols), explanation of symbols (IEC 60417, ISO 7000), declaration of maximum empty weight, and guidance on protective devices for leakage currents exceeding 10 mA.
  • Safety & durability tests: interlocks/guards tested for 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles/min; requirements for control visibility, secure positioning and prevention of accidental actuation.
  • Hygiene and ergonomics: appliances must comply with hygiene design requirements (EN ISO 14159) and ergonomic principles (EN 614-1, EN 614-2).
  • Noise guidance: airborne noise A-weighted sound pressure level below 70 dB(A) is indicated in instructions where applicable.
  • Warnings and misuse: instructions must include foreseeable misuse and safety warnings (e.g., disconnect power during cleaning/maintenance).

Practical applications

  • Ensures safe design, testing and documentation for commercial electric grillers and toasters, reducing risks in commercial kitchens and food-service environments.
  • Used to prepare technical files for CE marking and to demonstrate conformity with EU directives.
  • Guides product design decisions on guards, interlocks, hygiene-friendly construction, operator controls and maintenance procedures.

Who should use this standard

  • Appliance manufacturers and design engineers for commercial catering equipment
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
  • Compliance officers, procurement managers and safety engineers in food-service and institutional facilities
  • Technical writers preparing user manuals and safety instructions

Related standards

  • EN 60335-1:2012 (general requirements for household and similar electrical appliances)
  • EN ISO 14159:2008 (hygiene requirements for machinery design)
  • EN 614-1 / EN 614-2 (ergonomic design principles)
  • IEC 60335-2-38 (griddles)
  • IEC 60417 / ISO 7000 (graphical symbols for equipment)
