Overview
EN 1942:2008 - "Self adhesive tapes - Measurement of Thickness" is a European Standard published by CEN that defines a laboratory method to measure the total thickness of self-adhesive tapes (backing plus adhesive). The standard specifies required apparatus, sample conditioning, measurement procedure and reporting requirements to ensure repeatable, comparable tape thickness measurements used in quality control and product specification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measurement of total thickness of adhesive tape (backing + adhesive).
- Significance: Thickness is an important property for end-use performance and acceptance testing.
- Conditioning: Roll/sample conditioned at (23 ± 1) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH unless otherwise specified.
- Apparatus:
- Micrometer (calliper gauge) with two plane surfaces; the smaller face circular, 5 mm to 16 mm diameter.
- Faces parallel to within 5 µm, constrained to move on an axis perpendicular to them.
- Foot pressure on the tape in the range 40 kPa to 60 kPa.
- Instrument sensitivity at least 2 µm.
- Test pieces:
- Width greater than micrometer foot diameter and at least 50 mm long.
- Remove 3–6 outer turns of roll before sampling; typically one test piece per roll unless specified otherwise.
- Procedure:
- Zero the instrument and clean the pressure foot before each measurement.
- Place test piece adhesive side up; lower foot gently; record reading 1 s after lowering.
- Make three measurements on different areas of the piece and average for the thickness value.
- For double-coated tapes with liner: measure tape+liner, measure liner separately at same positions, subtract liner average from total average.
- Results & reporting:
- Express thickness as arithmetic mean in µm.
- Test report must reference EN 1942:2008 and include sample identification, results, any deviations, test date/place and tester signature.
Applications and who uses it
- Tape manufacturers for production quality control and specification compliance.
- Independent testing laboratories performing acceptance and comparative testing.
- Purchasing/procurement teams verifying supplier claims.
- R&D and product development teams assessing how thickness affects tape performance (e.g., bonding, cushioning, dielectric properties).
- Useful across industries using pressure-sensitive tapes: electronics, automotive, packaging, construction, and general industrial assembly.
Related standards
- Supersedes EN 1942:2003. Developed in collaboration with AFERA and PSTC with the intent of harmonisation and potential future adoption by ISO.
- ICS classification: 83.180 (Adhesives).
Keywords: EN 1942:2008, self adhesive tapes, measurement of thickness, tape thickness measurement, micrometer, adhesive tape thickness.
