Fuel cell technologies - Part 6-400: Micro fuel cell power systems - Power and data interchangeability (IEC 62282-6-400:2019)
This part of IEC 62282 covers the interchangeability of power and data between micro fuel
cell power systems and electronic devices to provide the micro fuel cell power system
compatibility for a variety of electronic devices while maintaining the safety and performance
of the micro fuel cell system. For that purpose, this document covers power interfaces and
their connector configuration. The power management circuitry and power sharing
methodology are also provided.
This document also covers the data communication protocol and its data specification.
Operation modes and alert conditions are also provided for the means to comply with the
power control requirements of the electronic device.
A micro fuel cell power system and micro fuel cell power unit block diagram is shown in
Figure 1. Micro fuel cell power systems and micro fuel cell power units are defined as devices
that are wearable or easily carried by hand, providing DC outputs that do not exceed 60 V DC
and power outputs that do not exceed 240 VA. This document covers the power and data
interfaces between the micro fuel cell power unit and electronic device.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC
Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

71 FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGIES –
72
73 Part 6-400: Micro fuel cell power systems –
74 Power and data interchangeability
75
76
77
78 1 Scope
79 This part of IEC 62282 covers interchangeability of power and data between micro fuel cell
80 power systems and electronic devices to provide the micro fuel cell power system
81 compatibility for a variety of electronic devices while maintaining the safety and performance
82 of micro fuel cell system. For this purpose, the standard covers power interfaces and its
83 connector configuration. The power management circuitry and power sharing methodology are
84 also provided.
85 This standard also covers data communication protocol and its data specification. Operation
86 modes and alerts conditions are also provided for the means to comply with the power control
87 requirements of electronic device.
88 A micro fuel cell power system and micro fuel cell power units block diagram is shown in
89 Figure 1. Micro fuel cell power systems and micro fuel cell power units are defined as those
90 wearable or easily carried by hand, providing d.c. outputs that do not exceed 60 V d.c. and
91 power outputs that do not exceed 240 VA. This standard covers the power and data interfaces
92 between the micro fuel cell power unit and electronic device.

137 3.1 Configuration of micro fuel cell power system
138 Electronic devices such as notebook PCs, cellular phones, etc. generally have three options
139 available for sourcing power to operate the device:
140 a) AC adapter port : sources relatively high current, but generally does not enable any data
141 communication functions;
142 b) DC adaper port : sources relatively high current, but generally does not enable any data
143 communication functions
144 c) battery port: sources current in the main battery port, or in the auxiliary battery port
145 (optional), and may provide data communication functions in addition to facilitating
146 provision of electricity to the device;

147 d) USB port: sources relatively low current, and generally provides data communication
148 functions in addition to facilitating provision of electricity to or from the device.
149 Note There is no option for power to be fed in through the serial or parallel ports of any presently known
150 electronic devices.
151 Consequently, there are three general types of configurations for power and data
152 communication between micro fuel cell power system and electronic device contemplated by
153 this standard:
154 1) stand-alone micro fuel cell power system: connected to
