CEN/TC 217/WG 11 - Test methods for sports surfaces.
Revision of existing test methods standards
Test methods for sports surfaces.
Revision of existing test methods standards
General Information
This document specifies three methods for the determination of the tensile properties of materials used as surfaces, elastic layers and shockpads for sports areas.
Method 1 measures the tensile strength of homogenous test specimens that are less than 25 mm in thickness.
Method 2 measures the transversal tensile strength of homogenous test specimens that are more than 25 mm in thickness.
Method 3 measures the tensile strength of sports surfaces or shockpads that are non-homogenous and contain slots or grooves cut into their structure.
This document is applicable both to prefabricated sheet materials and to materials formed by casting of liquid systems cured in-situ.
If the nature of the sports surface is such that a properly representative test piece cannot be prepared in the manner described in this document, then determination of tensile properties should not be attempted for quality control purposes, or as a predictor of performance in use. With such materials, it can be more appropriate to determine their compressive properties or other dynamic characteristics for these purposes.

This document specifies test methods for measuring the impact attenuation of sports surfaces. Three different methods are specified. In Procedure A, a series of tests are undertaken from differing drop heights and the HIC values are plotted, and the Critical Fall Height determined. In Procedure B, a single test is undertaken from differing drop heights and the HIC values are plotted, and the Critical Fall Height determined. In Procedure C a series of tests are made at a fixed drop height and the maximum value of HIC is calculated.
This test method is primarily intended for use on both natural and synthetic turf sport surfaces. It may be carried out in a laboratory on test specimens or in situ on installed sports surfaces. This test method may not be suitable for sports surfaces covered by EN 14904.

This document specifies a method of test for the determination of behaviour under a rolling load of certain surfaces for sports areas. It is suitable for tests undertaken in the laboratory and on site.

This document specifies a method for the determination of resistance to impact of sports floor systems. It is primarily designed to be used on surfaces intended for use in indoor sports halls. The test can be undertaken in the laboratory or on site.
When undertaking tests on site, it is important to note that permanent damage to the sports floor can be caused.

This European Standard specifies a test method for the determination of resistance to ultra violet (UV) degradation of synthetic surfaces for outdoor sports areas by the use of artificial weathering in order that the resulting changes in properties can be determined as detailed in the relevant product specification.

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the friction between multi-sports floor systems excluding synthetic turf for indoor use and a rotating foot with a vertical load. The method is applicable to tests carried out in the laboratory and on site.

This European Standard specifies a test method for the determination of shoe/surface friction of synthetic sports surfaces. The method can be used for the assessment of both indoor and outdoor sports surfaces.
NOTE This method is not considered suitable for long pile synthetic turf surfaces.

This European Standard specifies performance and durability characteristics of needle-punched sports surfaces primarily used outdoors. Two categories of surfaces are covered, based on the principal sporting use of the surface, as follows:
- surfaces designed for multi sports use, and
- surfaces designed primarily for tennis.
The requirements are intended to apply to surfaces used for community, educational and recreational sport. For professional and elite levels of competition, many sports governing bodies have published their own specifications; the requirements of the sports' governing bodies might differ from those detailed in this European Standard and facility developers are advised to ensure that they select surfaces offering the correct levels of performance for the levels of competition to be played on the pitch or court.
This European Standard is based on type approval testing of products in the laboratory. Selected requirements may also be used on site to assess the suitability of installed surfaces.

This European Standard specifies a method for conditioning synthetic turf and needle-punch surfaces by simulating interaction between a sports shoe and sports surface, to allow changes in appearance and to allow sports functional characteristics to be measured.
NOTE The method specified is commonly known as the Lisport method.

This European Standard specifies two test methods for the determination of joint strength of synthetic sports surfaces including synthetic turf. Method 1 describes a procedure for butt joints and overlapped adhesive joints in which a direct force is applied. Method 2 describes a procedure for reinforced butt joints in which a peel force is applied.

This Technical Specification specifies testing methods concerning the release from synthetic sport systems for outdoor of substances in ground water, surface water and drainage water by performing a dedicated leaching test on a sample of a "synthetic sport" system for outdoor.
In addition, this Technical Specification provides tools for a relative leaching assessment of system's components (e.g. granules) of different origin or nature.
This Technical Specification does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
