To prepare standards for electrical installations and equipment of ships and of mobile and fixed offshore units, incorporating good practice and aligning as far as possible existing regulations and IEC Publications. The standards will chiefly concern: a) factors promoting the safety of ships and of mobile and fixed offshore units; b) factors promoting safety of life. The standards will form a code of practical interpretation and amplification of the requirements of the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea, a guide for future regulations may be prepared by Administrations, and a statement of practice for use by builders and appropriate organizations. The standards will foster interchangeability of parts and ease the selection and procurement of equipment, including cables for transport of energy, signals and data, by indicating, as appropriate, IEC standards of ratings, types, dimensions, materials, quality, test methods, etc., whether or not these are influenced by regulations, and will thus facilitate interchanges between purchaser and supplier

General Information
IEC 60092-507:2014 specifies requirements for the design, construction and installation of electrical systems in small vessels, which have a length of up to 50 m, or which have a gross tonnage not exceeding 500 Gross Tonnes (GT), designed for use on inland waters or at sea. It is not intended to apply to: a) small craft equipped only with a battery supplying circuits for engine starting and navigation lighting recharged from an inboard or outboard engine driven alternator. b) recreational craft of less than 24 m hull length requiring to conform to the Recreational Craft Directive 94/25/EC Annex 1 Essential Requirements Part 5.3 Electrical systems, except for three-phase alternating current installations in such recreational craft which operate at a nominal voltage not exceeding AC 500 V. This third edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The standard now clarifies its application for electrical installations in those recreational craft which require to conform to the Recreational Craft Directive. b) The standard specifies requirements for methods of galvanic isolation for small vessels and recreational craft connecting to a low voltage AC shore supply. c) The standard includes design guidance for electric propulsion systems suitable for small vessels and associated installation requirements.

This standard applies to electric fans and their associated regulators for use inside ships on single-phase a.c. and d.c. circuits not exceeding 250 V intended for air circulation in accommodation and service spaces in ships. Wherever applicable, the term "fan" used in this standard includes the associated regulator, if any. This standard does not cover safety requirements of fans for use: a) in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); b) in air-heating equipment and air conditioners; c) in machinery spaces for ventilation, cooling etc. 1.2 Addition: This standard is concerned with safety requirements of fans for use in ships and does not cover performance requirements and corresponding tests which are covered in IEC Publication 307: Electric fans and regulators for use in ships.
