Overview

ASTM A204/A204M-17(2022): Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, Molybdenum is an international standard developed by ASTM for the specification of molybdenum-alloy steel plates. These plates are particularly intended for use in the manufacture of welded boilers and other pressure vessels. The standard defines chemical and mechanical requirements for plates available in three different grades (A, B, and C), each with specific tensile strength levels. Complying with the ASTM A204/A204M-17(2022) standard helps ensure material performance, quality, and safety in pressure vessel applications.

Key Topics

  • Material Grades and Strengths
    • Three grades of molybdenum alloy steel are specified:
      • Grade A: Tensile strength 65–85 ksi [450–585 MPa]
      • Grade B: Tensile strength 70–90 ksi [485–620 MPa]
      • Grade C: Tensile strength 75–95 ksi [515–655 MPa]
  • Chemical and Mechanical Requirements
    • Specific chemical composition limits for elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and molybdenum.
    • Mechanical properties include minimum yield strength and elongation, tailored to each grade.
    • The steel must be 'killed' (fully deoxidized) during manufacturing.
  • Thickness and Processing
    • No fixed upper limit on plate thickness, except as governed by compliance with mechanical properties.
    • Plates may be supplied as-rolled, normalized, normalized and tempered, or stress relieved based on thickness and purchaser needs.
    • Plates produced from coil must be processed and certified according to standard requirements.
  • Dual Units
    • The standard allows for both inch-pound and SI units, which must be used independently to avoid nonconformance.
  • Supplementary Requirements
    • Optional requirements include vacuum treatment, additional tensile or impact testing, ultrasonic, and magnetic particle examination for enhanced quality assurance.

Applications

  • Pressure Vessels
    • Ideal for the fabrication of welded pressure vessels used in various industries, including oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation.
  • Boilers
    • Widely used for boiler construction where high-temperature and pressure resistance is critical.
  • Industrial Equipment
    • Suitable for other high-stress applications demanding reliable mechanical strength and durability.
  • Custom Fabrications
    • Frequently specified in custom-built components where traceability, quality control, and compliance with recognized standards are required.

By specifying ASTM A204/A204M-17(2022) compliant plates, manufacturers gain:

  • Enhanced safety and reliability in service
  • Compliance with regulatory and industry best practices
  • Consistent mechanical and chemical properties for predictable performance
