Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Intermediate- and Higher-Temperature Service

ABSTRACT
This specification covers carbon-silicon steel plates primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels. Plates are available in three grades having different strength levels: Grade 60; Grade 65; and Grade 70. The steel shall be killed and made to a coarse austenitic grain size practice. The steel shall conform to the chemical requirements specified. Tension test shall be made to conform to the requirements specified.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers carbon-silicon steel plates primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels.
1.2 Plates under this specification are available in three grades having different strength levels as follows:
Grade U.S. [SI]
Tensile Strength, ksi [MPa]
60 [415]
60–80 [415–550]
65 [450]
65–85 [450–585]
70 [485]
70–90 [485–620]
1.3 The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements.
1.4 For plates produced from coil and furnished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and the reporting of additional test results, of Specification A20/A20M apply.
1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A515/A515M-17(2022) is the standard specification developed by ASTM International for carbon-silicon steel plates designed for use in pressure vessels operating at intermediate and higher temperatures. The standard outlines the requirements for steel plates used primarily in welded boilers and other pressure vessel applications, ensuring quality, strength, and reliability in demanding environments.

This specification covers three distinct grades-Grade 60, Grade 65, and Grade 70-each offering increasing levels of tensile and yield strength to accommodate various service conditions. The plates may be delivered in as-rolled, normalized, or stress-relieved conditions depending on thickness and customer requirements.

Key Topics

  • Material Grades and Mechanical Properties:
    The standard includes three grades:

    • Grade 60: Tensile strength 60-80 ksi [415–550 MPa], minimum yield 32 ksi [220 MPa]
    • Grade 65: Tensile strength 65-85 ksi [450–585 MPa], minimum yield 35 ksi [240 MPa]
    • Grade 70: Tensile strength 70-90 ksi [485–620 MPa], minimum yield 38 ksi [260 MPa] Each grade specifies minimum elongation requirements for ductility.
  • Chemical Composition:
The steel must meet defined limits for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Maximum carbon content and manganese allowance vary by thickness and grade.

  • Manufacturing Requirements:

    • Plates must be killed steel and produced to a coarse austenitic grain size.
    • Plates 2 in. [50 mm] and under are typically supplied as-rolled; thicker plates are normalized.
    • Supplementary and additional requirements (such as vacuum treatment, impact testing, and ultrasonic examination) may be applied if specified in the purchase order.
  • Dimensional and Testing Standards:
The specification sets the highest standards for plate thickness, dimensional tolerances, mechanical testing, chemical analysis, and reporting.

  • Compliance and International Use:
ASTM A515/A515M is harmonized with international principles set by organizations such as the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, ensuring broad recognition and applicability.

Applications

ASTM A515/A515M carbon steel plates are widely used in the manufacturing of:

  • Welded boilers and heat exchangers
  • Pressure vessels operating at intermediate and high temperatures
  • Industrial steam generators and reactors
  • Process equipment for petrochemical, chemical, and power generation industries

These plates are selected for applications where strength and toughness at elevated temperatures are critical. The availability of three strength grades allows engineers to balance mechanical requirements with design flexibility and economic considerations.

Related Standards

Several standards are referenced to ensure the suitability and performance of plates produced to ASTM A515/A515M:

  • ASTM A20/A20M: General requirements for steel plates for pressure vessels (e.g., testing, dimensions, repair)
  • ASTM A435/A435M: Straight-beam ultrasonic examination
  • ASTM A577/A577M: Angle-beam ultrasonic examination
  • ASTM A578/A578M: Straight-beam ultrasonic examination for special applications
  • ASME SA-515/SA-515M: ASME adoption for boiler and pressure vessel code applications

These related standards help users ensure the plates meet all relevant quality, safety, and performance requirements critical for pressure vessel applications.
