This specification covers wall padding and padding for other indoor structures. All padding constructions are included. Qualification of construction designs and comparison of products shall be discussed. The padding can be classified into two types: Type 1 for permanently attached paddings and Type 2 for removable paddings. The paddings can also be classified into grades: Grade A for coated paddings and Grade B for covered or encased paddings. Physical properties such as shock absorption, gmax, HIC, and thickness shall be determined.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Textile, paper, vinyl, expanded vinyl, or other polymeric wall or ceiling coverings and wall or ceiling covering systems used as interior finish are often evaluated with Test Method E84 to comply with building or life safety code requirements. This practice describes specimen preparation and mounting procedures for such materials and systems.  
5.2 This practice also describes specimen preparation and mounting procedures for other systems that are evaluated with Test Method E84 to comply with building or life safety code requirements. Such systems are facings or wood veneers intended to be applied on site over a wood substrate and water-resistive barriers.  
5.3 This practice is not applicable to the following materials:  
5.3.1 Foam plastic materials used as water-resistive barriers.  
5.3.2 Water vapor retarders installed over thermal insulation.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice describes procedures for specimen preparation and mounting when testing textile, paper, vinyl, expanded vinyl, or other polymeric wall or ceiling covering materials to assess flame spread and smoke development as surface burning characteristics using Test Method E84.  
1.2 This practice applies also to facings or wood veneers intended to be applied on site over a wood substrate (see 8.7).  
1.3 This practice applies also to water-resistive barriers that are used as a component of exterior wall systems, as part of the exterior envelope (see 3.2.10 and 8.9).  
1.4 This practice does not apply to the following:  
1.4.1 Laminated products factory produced with a wood substrate, which are covered by Practice E2579.  
1.4.2 Water-resistive barriers comprised of foam plastic materials contained within the wall system (see 5.3.1).  
1.4.3 Water vapor retarders used, in conjunction with thermal insulation, on the interior or exterior side of an exterior wall (see 3.2.11 and 5.3.1).  
1.5 Testing is conducted with Test Method E84.  
1.6 This practice does not provide pass/fail criteria that can be used as a regulatory tool.  
1.7 Units—Use the values stated in inch-pound units as the standard, in referee decisions. The values in the SI system of units are given in parentheses, for information only; see IEEE/ASTM SI-10 for further details.  
1.8 This fire standard cannot be used to provide quantitative measures.

Standard Test Method for Determination of Mold Growth on Coated Building Products Designed for Interior Applications Using an Environmental Chamber and Indirect Inoculation

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 An accelerated test for determining the resistance of interior coated building products to mold growth is useful in estimating the relative performance for use in interior environments under conditions favorable to fungal growth.  
5.2 Static or environmental chambers provide controlled laboratory micro-environment conditions. These chambers are not intended to duplicate room conditions, and care must be taken when interpreting the results. Static chambers are not a substitute for dynamic chambers or field studies.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers an environmental chamber and the conditions of operation to evaluate in a 4-week period the relative resistance to mold growth and microbial surface defacement on coated building products designed for interior application using an indirect inoculation method. The apparatus is designed so it can be easily built or obtained by any interested party.  
1.2 This test method can be used to evaluate the comparative resistance of coated building products to accelerated mold growth. Ratings do not imply a specific time period that the coated building product will be free of fungal growth during installation in an interior environment.  
1.3 This test method is not intended for use in the evaluation of public health claims.  
1.4 The test method is intended for the accelerated evaluation of mold growth on a coated building product designed for interior use. This method is not intended for evaluation of surfaces designed for exterior applications or uncoated surfaces. Use of this test method for evaluating exterior performance has not been validated, nor have the limitations for such use been determined.

1.2 This practice covers the factors that are required to be controlled while installing thick poured gypsum concrete underlayment as a base for resilient flooring.  
1.3 This practice does not cover the structural adequacy of the wood structural panel subfloor or concrete subfloor. The structural integrity of assemblies is governed by local building codes.  
1.4 This practice does not supersede in any manner the thick poured gypsum concrete underlayment manufacturers, adhesive manufacturer’s or resilient flooring manufacturer’s written instructions. Consult the individual manufacturer for specific recommendations.  
1.5 Thick poured gypsum concrete underlayments are not suitable for use on concrete slabs on ground due to potential moisture problems arising from moisture intrusion, unless an adequate vapor retarder or vapor barrier is present directly beneath the concrete subfloor.

Standard Test Method for Shear Fatigue of Sandwich Core Materials

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Often the most critical stress to which a sandwich panel core is subjected is shear. The effect of repeated shear stresses on the core material can be very important, particularly in terms of durability under various environmental conditions.  
5.2 This test method provides a standard method of obtaining the sandwich core shear fatigue response. Uses include screening candidate core materials for a specific application, developing a design-specific core shear cyclic stress limit, and core material research and development.
Note 3: This test method may be used as a guide to conduct spectrum loading. This information can be useful in the understanding of fatigue behavior of core under spectrum loading conditions, but is not covered in this standard.  
5.3 Factors that influence core fatigue response and shall therefore be reported include the following: core material, core geometry (density, cell size, orientation, etc.), specimen geometry and associated measurement accuracy, specimen preparation, specimen conditioning, environment of testing, specimen alignment, loading procedure, loading frequency, force (stress) ratio and speed of testing (for residual strength tests).
Note 4: If a sandwich panel is tested using the guidance of this standard, the following may also influence the fatigue response and should be reported: facing material, adhesive material, methods of material fabrication, adhesive thickness and adhesive void content. Further, core-to-facing strength may be different between precured/bonded and co-cured facings in sandwich panels with the same core and facing materials.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method determines the effect of repeated shear forces on core material used in sandwich panels. Permissible core material forms include those with continuous bonding surfaces (such as balsa wood and foams) as well as those with discontinuous bonding surfaces (such as honeycomb).  
1.2 This test method is limited to test specimens subjected to constant amplitude uniaxial loading, where the machine is controlled so that the test specimen is subjected to repetitive constant amplitude force (stress) cycles. Either shear stress or applied force may be used as a constant amplitude fatigue variable.  
1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel shall consist of a noncombustible water-resistant gypsum core, surfaced with glass mat, partially or completely embedded in the core, and with a water-resistant coating on one surface. The specimens shall be tested for flexural strength, humidified deflection, core hardness, end hardness, edge hardness, nail pull resistance, water resistance, and surface water absorption. Coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel shall have surfaces true and free of imperfections that render the panel unfit for its designed use.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel designed for use on ceilings and walls in bath and shower areas as a base for the application of ceramic or plastic tile.  
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets.  
1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.
