Overview

ASTM C1660-10(2018): Standard Specification for Thin-bed Mortar for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) Masonry provides the latest requirements for the materials and performance of thin-bed mortar used in AAC masonry construction. Developed by ASTM International, this standard supports consistency in the selection and application of thin-bed mortars, ensuring their compatibility with AAC units. The specification defines the scope, referenced materials, performance criteria, and testing methods, making it a vital reference for professionals in the masonry and construction industries focused on autoclaved aerated concrete systems.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application: This standard is specifically designed for thin-bed mortar intended for AAC masonry, ensuring mortars are correctly matched with AAC blocks and structural systems.
  • Material Requirements: All constituent materials-including masonry cement, Portland cement, hydrated lime, aggregate, mortar cement, blended and hydraulic cements, adhesives, and other additives-must comply with applicable ASTM specifications.
  • Performance and Testing: To ensure durability and structural integrity, the thin-bed mortar must meet minimum splitting tensile strength requirements appropriate to the class of AAC being installed. Testing must be performed by accredited laboratories following a standardized methodology.
  • Safety and Best Practices: The standard highlights the need for users to observe all safety, health, and environmental regulations when employing thin-bed mortar products and during construction operations.

Applications

ASTM C1660 is essential for the following practical applications:

  • Construction of AAC Masonry: The standard guides engineers, architects, and contractors in selecting and using thin-bed mortars that optimize the joint performance in autoclaved aerated concrete walls and partitions. Thin-bed mortars are specifically engineered to create strong, minimal thickness joints (typically 2-3 mm) between AAC units.
  • Quality Control and Compliance: Manufacturers and testing laboratories use the requirements in ASTM C1660 to ensure their products meet the necessary performance benchmarks, particularly regarding tensile strength and durability.
  • Project Specification: Project documents and procurement processes frequently reference this standard to enforce material quality and testing procedures, reducing issues related to in-field performance or regulatory compliance.
  • International Trade: Because this specification aligns with globally recognized principles and the World Trade Organization’s TBT Committee references, it supports cross-border procurement and comparability of AAC construction materials.

Related Standards

ASTM C1660 references several closely related ASTM standards to define material and testing requirements:

  • ASTM C91: Specification for Masonry Cement
  • ASTM C144: Specification for Aggregate for Masonry Mortar
  • ASTM C150: Specification for Portland Cement
  • ASTM C207: Specification for Hydrated Lime for Masonry Purposes
  • ASTM C595: Specification for Blended Hydraulic Cements
  • ASTM C1157: Performance Specification for Hydraulic Cement
  • ASTM C1329: Specification for Mortar Cement
  • ASTM C1384: Specification for Admixtures for Masonry Mortars
  • ASTM C1386: Specification for Precast AAC Wall Construction Units (withdrawn)
  • ASTM C1452: Specification for Reinforced AAC Elements (withdrawn)
  • ASTM C1600/C1600M: Specification for Rapid Hardening Hydraulic Cement
  • ASTM C1006: Test Method for Splitting Tensile Strength of Masonry Units
  • ASTM C1093: Practice for Accreditation of Testing Agencies for Masonry

By adhering to ASTM C1660 and its referenced documents, construction professionals ensure that AAC masonry systems are built for lasting performance, safety, and compliance with both national and international standards. This improves project outcomes, structural reliability, and overall quality in AAC construction.
