This European Standard defines the specifications and test methods concerning the construction, safety, rational use of energy and fitness for purpose, and also the classification and marking of gas-fired instantaneous water heaters for sanitary uses, hereafter called “water heaters”.
This European Standard applies to water heaters:
- of types AAS, B11, B11BS, B12, B12BS, B13, B13BS, B14, B22, B23, B32, B33, B44, B52, B53, C11, C12, C13, C21, C22, C23, C32, C33, C42, C43, C52, C53, C62, C63, C72, C73, C82and C83 according to CEN/TR 1749;
- fitted with atmospheric burners;
- equipped with atmospheric burners assisted by a fan for the supply of combustion air or evacuation of combustion products or fully premix burners;
- using one or more combustible gases corresponding to the three gas families and at the pressures stated in accordance to EN 437;
- of nominal heat input not exceeding 70 kW;
- with an ignition burner or with direct ignition of the main burner.
In this European Standard, the heat inputs are expressed in relation to the net calorific value (Hi).
This European Standard does not contain all the requirements necessary for:
- boiling water appliances;
- appliances intended to be connected to a mechanical means of evacuating the combustion products;
- appliances which fulfil a dual role of space heating and heating water for sanitary use;
- appliances making use of the heat of condensation of the water contained in the combustion products;
- water heaters of types B21, B31, B41, B42, B43 and B51.
This European Standard only covers water heaters where the fan, if any, is an integral part of the appliance.
This European Standard:
- does not apply to appliances not intended to be connected to a flue when they are not fitted with an atmosphere sensing device;
- takes account of the information given in Technical Report CEN/CR 1472:1994 with respect to marking.
Type B appliances should be with a combustion products discharge safety device to comply with essential requirement 3.4.3 of the Gas Appliances Directive 2009/142/EC. In this European Standard, the appliance is identified as type B11BS.
Appliances intended to be installed outdoors or in a room separate from inhabited rooms and provided with appropriate ventilation are not required to have this combustion products discharge safety device but, in this case, appropriate warnings on the packaging, and in the instructions should clearly define the limited authorized use for this type of appliance. In this European Standard, the appliance is identified as type B11.

This document is applicable to independent boiler appliances for solid fuel with a nominal output up to 50 kW (hand and automatically fired independent boilers (hereafter called appliances)).
The indented use of the appliances is space heating in residential buildings. This happens directly or via provision of hot water for central heating. They are designed for use only with open vented systems at a working pressure not exceeding 2 bar.
The appliances can burn one or more types of the following solid fuels as specified:
- wood logs;
- compressed untreated wood;
- wood pellets;
- lignite briquettes;
- solid mineral fuels;
- peat briquettes.
The appliances are operated closed and/or open.
The appliances are typed according to their tightness depending on their designation in accordance with a possible operation together with a room ventilation system.
This document is not applicable for:
- appliances for hot water only production and heat output < 5 kW;
- automatic stoking devices.
This document specifies procedures for assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) of characteristics of solid fuel burning independent boiler appliances.

This document is applicable to gas-fired appliances producing domestic hot water. It applies to both instantaneous and storage tank appliances; waters-heaters and combination boilers that have:
- a heat input not exceeding 400 kW;
- a hot water storage tank capacity (if any) not exceeding 2 000 l.
In the case of combination boilers, with or without storage tank, domestic hot water production is integrated or coupled, the whole being marketed as a single unit.
The water heaters covered by the present standard are considered "conventional water heaters" as defined by the Transitional Methods (Commission Communication 2014/C 207/03) then in the calculation formula for the Annual Electricity Consumption (AEC), Qcor is equal to zero.
In case of the boiler is equipped with an internal or external Passive Flue Heat Recovery Device (PFHRD), the boiler efficiency can be assessed by applying EN 13203-2:2022 in combination with EN 13203-7:2022. In case of a PFHRD, where the technology has the ability to recover energy out of flue gasses during central heating production to be able to preheat the domestic hot water (indirect contribution), to assess this indirect contribution EN 13203-7:2022 applies. EN 13203-2:2022 is applicable for measuring and calculating the direct efficiency (direct contribution) while combining the measuring results of EN 13203-7:2022 the overall efficiency (direct and indirect) can be calculated. EN 13203-1:2015 sets out in qualitative and quantitative terms the performance in delivery of domestic hot water for a selected variety of uses. It also gives a system for presenting the information to the user. The present document sets out a method for assessing the energy performance of the appliances. It specifies a few daily load profiles for each domestic hot water use, kitchen, shower, bath and a combination of these, together with corresponding test procedures, enabling the energy performances of different gas-fired appliances to be compared and matched to the needs of the user. Where other technologies are combined with a gas-fired boiler or a water heater to produce domestic hot water, specific parts of EN 13203 apply.

This document is applicable to gas-fired appliances producing domestic hot water. It applies to both instantaneous and storage gas-fired combined with electric heat pump.
It applies to a package marketed as single unit or fully specified by the manufacturer that have:
- a heat input not exceeding 400 kW;
- a hot water storage tank capacity (if any) not exceeding 2 000 l.
EN 13203-1:2015 sets out in qualitative and quantitative terms the performance in delivery of domestic hot water for a selected variety of uses. It also gives a system for presenting the information to the user. The present document sets out a method for assessing the energy performance of gas fired appliances combined with heat pump with electrically driven compressor according to EN 16147. It specifies a number of daily load profiles for each domestic hot water use, kitchen, shower, bath and a combination of these, together with corresponding test procedures, enabling the energy performances of different gas-fired appliances to be compared and matched to the needs of the user. Where other technologies are combined with a gas-fired boiler or a water heater to produce domestic hot water, specific parts of EN 13203 apply.
The present document does not apply for gas boilers with recovery systems using combustion products as heat source for the electrical heat pump.
When the electrical heat pump does not work for domestic hot water production in the summer period, the present standard is not applicable for energy performances assessing, instead EN 13203-2:2022 is applicable.
