This European Standard specifies requirements for fairleads on inland navigation vessels.  It applies to fairleads for guiding ropes perpendicularly to the fairlead shaft.

EN 15272-2:2007 - "Inland navigation vessels - Equipment for rope leading - Part 2: Fairlead" is a CEN European Standard that specifies the design, material, strength, testing, marking and documentation requirements for fairleads used on inland navigation vessels. It applies to fairleads that guide ropes perpendicular to the fairlead shaft and is intended for deck equipment, mooring and rope-leading installations on barges, push boats and similar inland waterway craft.

Type test: rope laid U-shape around the fairlead; apply a tensile load of 1.25 × minimum breaking load (per prEN 15272-1) to both rope ends for 60 s, repeated 50 times; no permanent deformation allowed.
• Materials: Any suitable material is permitted except grey cast iron. Plastics must be UV-resistant. Annex A gives material guidance for cast steel rollers, shafts (e.g., S235JRG2), bronze bushes and PA6 roller bushes.
• Corrosion protection & bearings: Corrosion-susceptible parts must be permanently protected. Bearing shell materials must be compatible; bearings must be either maintenance‑free or capable of lubrication.
• Fixing & accessories: For nominal sizes 3–8, fixing holes on opposite ribs for shackles are required. Detailed component dimensions (rollers, shafts, bushes, washers) are provided in informative annexes.
• Marking & documentation: Fairleads must be marked with EN 15272-2, nominal size and manufacturer mark. Manufacturer’s certificate of conformity is required.
