Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 54: Curing of specimen for test of mixtures with bitumen emulsion

This document describes a series of accelerated protocols for curing of bituminous mixtures with bitumen emulsion in order to assess their properties.
The protocols are to be selected according to the type of mixture, the type of specimen, the test to be carried out and the conditions of the place of use.
This document applies to mixtures, specimens and cores, prepared in the laboratory and/or taken from the worksite.
The laboratory curing procedure is designed for bituminous mixtures containing bitumen emulsions, but it could also be used for other types of asphalt mixture that require curing in order to reach their potential strength.

3.1
curing level
status and properties of the specimen, after subjecting to the chosen curing protocol
3.2
conventional curing level
status of the specimen, after subjecting to the chosen curing protocol, when its properties are assumed
to be equivalent to the properties in the field
Note 1 to entry: To determine the conventional curing level and appropriate curing protocols, studies can be
developed aimed to compare the properties after the protocols and the properties obtained in the field.
Note 2 to entry: Furthermore, in the manufacture and compaction of the mix, it is possible that some curing
occurs. It is convenient to evaluate this effect.
3.3
non-compacted mixtures
bituminous mixture that has not been subjected to compaction process
3.4
unconfined specimen
compacted specimen to be subjected to curing after being extracted from the mould
3.5

4 Principle
Several conditioning protocols with as a combination of the temperature (Table 2), relative humidity
(Table 3) and duration parameters (Table 4) are described with the aim to obtain properties of an
asphalt mixture, equivalent to the properties in the field after a certain period of time.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Climatic chamber or ventilated oven
NOTE Emissions of volatile compounds can occur during the curing process.
5.1.1 Climatic chamber, thermostatically controlled, suitable for heating the specimens up to the
relevant temperature with the tolerance of ±2 °C and humidity controlled with the tolerance of ±10 %.
5.1.2 Ventilated oven, thermostatically controlled, suitable for heating the specimens up to the
relevant temperature with the tolerance of ±2 °C.
5.2 Perforated boxes
Dimensions (200 ± 5) mm long, (300 ± 5) mm wide and (50 ± 2) mm high, made of perforated
(3 ± 0,2) mm metal sheet on the sides and bottom. Equipped with paws (10 ± 1) mm in diameter and
(50 ± 2) mm high at each corner of the base, see Figure 1.
Boxes only concern the uncompacted mixture.

7 Procedure
7.1 General
The specimens after compaction or the non-compacted mixes are placed in the oven under the
conditions specified by each protocol. The supporting surface shall have holes no larger than 3 mm to
allow air circulation.
The protocol shall be selected according to Clause 6.2: temperature, taking into account the softening
point of the binder or the mastic of the mixture, to avoid binder fluence or collapses of the compacted
specimens; relative humidity, to ensure proper curing for example mixes containing hydraulic binders;
and a duration sufficient to complete the curing process.
The protocol shall be selected also depending on the type of mixture, emulsion, sample size and place of
application.
7.2 Uncompacted mixtures
Weigh 4 000 grams of uncompacted mixture in each perforated box and place in centre of oven. It can
be placed several boxes considering that the spacing between boxes shall be at least 50 mm in all
directions.
After the curing process, the specimens shall be taken out from the oven and let them cool to room
temperature.
7.3 Compacted specimen
7.3.1 Unconfined specimens
Each compacted specimen shall have adequate space around it to allow proper curing. The space should
be at least 50 mm in any direction except the bearing face.
After the curing process, the specimens shall be taken out from the oven and left to cool to room
temperature. If the integrity of the specimen is altered during the process, other protocols shall be
chosen.
7.3.2 Confined specimens
The confinement of the compacted specimens is indicated for mixtures too fragile to be extracted from
the mould.
It is the case for mixtures with bitumen emulsion where the binder includes solvents or soft bitumen, or
both. Every compacted specimen shall have adequate space around it to allow a good air circulation and
manipulation of the specimen.
To avoid material loss from the confined specimen, it is recommended to put the specimen in the oven,
slide down the specimen into the mould to rest on the tray.
After the curing process, the specimens shall be taken out from the oven and left to cool to room
temperature prior to removal from the mould and testing. If the integrity of the specimen is altered
during the process, other protocols shall be chosen.
8 Test report
The report on the test(s) for which the samples are produced shall reference to this document and
include the following:
a) the mixture composition;
b) the nature and origin of the component materials;
c) curing carried out on sample
